Aloe Alexis on the way and why we picked it

We just placed an order for a King Size Aloe Alexis, with Comfort layer of 6. I want to explain why we chose what we did in case others in similar positions look for information, I will also update the post with periodic reviews etc.

I am a 35 year old, disabled vet, that just retired this last week after a long battle with the medical retirement process. This is not to start a “sob story” etc. I just use it as an basis for explanation into my build type etc. (will also point out I am not a combat injury case etc.)

At 33 years old, I needed a single hip replacement due to degradation of the femur in conjuction with FAI(femoral acetabular impingement) and other issues. by later the same year of the hip replacement, i lost most of the muscle tissue in the same leg due to a 3 litre blood clot in the muscle, my other hip had to have 2 surgeries to correct the same issues, my low back l5-s1 had “slipped”, and l4-5 both bulged/DDD etc. with tears., my neck c5-6-7 had buldged with absolute stenosis and perm., mild paraylsis of the circumflex nerve. Basically I went from a health top heavy man to a train wreck inside of a year.

We have gone through 3 mattresses in that time frame as I am currently at 230 lbs give or take, now its closer to 22% body fat as opposed to the 16 it was 2 years ago, picture a beer keg on stick legs and thats my build.
My wife, is 5’2" and 120lbs and has blessed us with 3 children and as such has the normal “problems” (pelvis pain/flare ups) and a mild case of restless leg syndrome.
The closest we got into a true “comfortable” bed is a 10inch memory foam, with a latex topper, however, due to money constraints top quality was not an option, so middle of the road was the order of the day. we have gone back and forth between this setup and our 6 year old pillow top depending on the needs of the day., the memory foam has so many issues in regards to “pinning” us into a position, that some nights/weeks, we(i) cannot sleep on it, so i go to the other mattress etc.

over the last month or so, we have been bed hopping/shopping all around the OKC area, 1 day the sleep number felt great, the next week the same bed at same settings was painful and the pressure points very pronounced. the higher end innerspring mattresses we kept going back to (sealy hybrid and serta trump series) felt great initially, but we just know that within a year or two they will sag, its got springs, its gonna sag, period. and neither of us could ever “zero in” on what comfort level we wanted. As I want a firm, but need a plush due to injuries/yet still being a side sleeper. and her wanting a plush, but needing a little firm due to being a stomach sleeper.

then comes random postings I found describing latex hybrids, I could never pin anyone down on why/what about it etc. that folks liked about their brand etc. but the consensus that I found by reading between the lines was, If you do not like/trust the sleep number and memory foam works but not perfect, then latex is the way to go. Then comes brand shopping, I will admit, this was the easiest part- find a manufactor that offers what I want, mixed with what I need, at a price I am willing to pay, its a matter of if your willing to buy into the promises etc. as when it comes to sleep, i mean real sleep, not drug induced/not short naps throughout a day because of pain etc. Then you become desperate, and you need for some of these products to live up the hype.

Well after brief searches BB seemed to me the recommended place to go, and within 24 hours we had asked our questions of Mario, verified that what I had read made sense to me and placed our order.

Now is this bed an answer to a question we hadn’t asked, who knows, we shall see, but so far I am very pleased with experience and I hope I do not get burned.

TLDR version; bi-later hip issues/replacement, low back and cervical issue, heavy tall husband/petite wife, ordered Aloe Alexis with 6 comfort level, will review. and follow up. until then HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY

Hi cryinsham30,

Thanks for taking the time to share your comments and feedback and for letting us know what you ended up purchasing … and the reasoning behind it.

As you probably know … I think very highly of Brooklyn Bedding and you certainly made a great quality/value choice.

Just for the sake of clarity … with innerspring mattresses it’s almost always the use of lower quality foams in the comfort layers that will soften, sag, or break down … not the innersprings themselves (which rarely fail). This is particularly true with the major brands and is the reason I generally suggest purchasing from smaller local or regional manufacturers who tend to use much higher quality materials in their comfort layers … and sell their mattresses for lower prices compared to their larger competitors.

One of the best parts about the mattress you purchased is that you not only have the option to choose your firmness level before a purchase but you can change it after a purchase as well if your sleeping experience indicates that you need to.

Most importantly … congratulations on your new mattress

I’m looking forward to any further comments and feedback you have the chance to share when you receive it and have had the chance to sleep on it for a bit.

Ok, we are atr the 3 week point of usage and I must say we are extremely pleased with the mattress. Had a small shipping error that Mario quickly corrected and it was overall to our advantage, so no complaint there. (sent the wrong base that we purchased, I needed the higher frame and they sent the flat low one without any railes etc., within 3 days Mario had sent me rails which due to my condition and living rural made life alot easier since we needed friends to help us move/assemble the bed).

So in regards to the purchase, yes accidents happen, but it is what the company does that makes the difference, and brooklyn bedding, not only made it right, they did so promptly with no complaining/dancing around etc. bottom line they went above what most of us consider good customer service/relations these days and did great.

Now for the bed, Assembly was weird, and deciding which sets of the comfort layer went where was a debate for us. Other that that easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Day 1. Wow we instantly fell in love with the bed, and the latex pillows. I have spent alot on pillows over the last few years and my favorite was an all loose wool stuffed pillow. (bought it from a sheep farm in Germany). These shredded latex blows that away.

Night 1. Why the heck did we buy this bed, not only did every single pressure point light up, but now both of our backs where in a constant spasm in the morning. However, this was expected, so not throwing it in the heap.

Night 2. hrrrm still not perfect, but man had a great nap after therapy, and tossing and turning was easier.

All in all it took about a full week to really “break in” to were we did not hurt every morning, but it did in fact stop. The wifes issues are better, my pain is reduced, I sleep great on this bed and it does not “hold me in” like memory foam, so if I do happen to move to an uncomfortable position during sleep, I can get out of it before I wake up etc.

The comfort layer of 6, is just about right, I really think the wife wants to go with an 8, but the foam has softened up a little and she hasn’t mentioned it lately, and the 6 works great for me, although I could “live with” an 8, or we could split the layers etc. we are very pleased with our purchase, it supports perfectly the “big and tall” just fine wwithout feeling like your sunk in or stuck. and so far there is very little “long term memory” issues with the foam, except the slight ridge in the middle and around my pelvis area, but it is very very very miniscule and has not gotten “worse”.

If you have the money, and the need to buy this bed, buy it. if your a bigger person, the 14 inches will serve you well. Zero regrets with this purchase and we are in love with the mattress.

cryinsham30 I saw this thread when I was researching and didn’t reply because I really couldn’t add anything. Now having received and slept good on my new BB mattress, I feel like echoing your sentiment towards Brooklyn Bedding.

With the 4th almost here and several veterans in our family, thank you for serving.
