Best pillow for neck pain, Expert recommendations to choose

I’ve tried several of those “butterfly” cervical pillows, from a budget option on Amazon to one over $100. Across the board, I found them helpful for neck support and general comfort, but I didn’t notice any meaningful difference tied to price. Most seem to use variations of high-density polyfoam, sometimes combined with viscoelastic memory foam.

For me, they’re great when neck or back issues pop up out of nowhere. The structured design helps keep your head and neck aligned, similar to a temporary support like an ace bandage, cast, or compression sock. But once things settle back to normal, I tend to find them a bit annoying for long-term use.

Curious if others have had a similar experience.

I had one and it felt good on my neck but i need a very soft high loft pillow. With both that foam and a serene foam pillow it gave me a headache because they felt soft in the hand but over the night, too firm.

Honestly, neck pain almost always comes down to a loft and alignment issue rather than just the pillow being “too hard” or “too soft.” If your spine isn’t neutral, your neck muscles are straining all night.

I’ve had really good luck with the Dream Sleep Pillow for this. What works well is how it maintains its shape under the weight of your head without bottoming out, which keeps your cervical spine inline if you’re a side or back sleeper.

If you’re trying to figure out if your current setup is too high or too low, they do a breakdown on the best pillows for a sore neck does a really thorough job of explaining how to measure your ideal loft based on your sleep position. Definitely worth a look before buying anything.

As a side sleeper, I’d focus more on getting the correct loft and neck alignment than on a specific brand. Between those two, I’d lean toward the Osteo since many side sleepers seem to find it supportive while still being comfortable. That said, pillow fit is very personal, so make sure there’s a good return policy. A pillow that keeps your head level with your spine is usually the biggest factor in reducing neck pain.
