Can't find new mattress that doesn't cause side back/rib pain

Hello, I am a lightweight (130lb) 5’7, male, side sleeper. I was sleeping on a 17yo sealy (don’t know model/firmness) and experienced no back problems. I have no history of back problems (only 34yo). I decided to upgrade to a newer mattress just to get something nicer and that was a big mistake.

I’ve tried 5 new mattresses and all have caused pain in my ribcage and side of my back. They all feel hard on the side of my back after I lay on them for a good 10 minutes or so. I have tried a helix midnight luxe (medium), then tried the sunset (their soft model). A purple RestorePremier and now I have a Tempurpedic luxeadapt soft. I also tried a posturpedic with pillow top for a few nights and it was horrible.

At this point I have no idea what to do. My old mattress has been thrown out unfortunately and i’m told they don’t make mattresses like that anymore. The only thing I can think of is trying a firm mattress but I have avoided this because I am light and a side sleeper.

If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Hey Logan.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

At 130 lbs, you aren’t heavy enough to quite sink into those high-density foam beds the way they’re designed. A medium mattress of pretty much any brand need more body weight to sink “in” instead of floating “on” - you’re basically just floating on a firmness wall that’s putting all the pressure on your ribs. You’d like need soft/plush or potential extra plush.

Your old Sealy worked because it was likely a simple spring system with immediate give. Since the big-box foam brands aren’t working, I’d suggest looking at a traditional two-sided innerspring or a natural latex hybrid. Natural materials like wool and Talalay latex are much more forgiving for lightweight side sleepers because they provide a soft, buoyant feeling without needing a lot of weight to compress.

Microcoils are also a great option for rib pain because they respond to your movement instantly. If you’re stuck with your current mattress for now, adding a 2" wool or soft latex topper might be the quickest way to get that surface relief your ribs are looking for.

Are you open to looking at more traditional, fiber-based builds instead of the standard foam options?

Thank you for your reply. And this is what i’ve been told, that i’m not pushing through the comfort layer to the support layer. I did try soft versions of most of these mattresses and they were just as bad as the medium Helix I had.

I am open to anything that works. Unfortunately, I am stuck with my current tempurpedic now. But I am still open to any recommendations, for mattresses or toppers.

Thanks again!

That sounds really frustrating, especially since you were sleeping comfortably before. Based on what you described—pressure building in your ribcage and side after a short time—it may not be about going softer or firmer, but rather how the mattress distributes weight and supports your body. As a lighter (130 lb) side sleeper, you need something that both relieves pressure at your shoulders and ribs and keeps your spine aligned. Our Back Science mattresses are designed with that in mind, using Hypergel—a more buoyant and responsive material than traditional memory foam—so you stay lifted while still getting cushioning at pressure points instead of sinking in unevenly. We also use zoned support, with more give under the shoulders and more support through the hips and midsection, to help maintain proper alignment without forcing you into a firmer feel.

We also know comfort is highly individual, which is why we offer a 365-night sleep trial that includes the ability to modify the mattress if needed. Rather than being locked into one feel, we can work with you to fine-tune the comfort and support so it better matches your body and sleeping style. And for long-term peace of mind, our mattresses are backed by a 30-year limited warranty, designed to ensure they maintain their structure and support over time. Together, that gives you the flexibility to get it right now and the confidence that it will continue to perform well for years to come.
