So, I’m back…I’ve spent over a year tyring to DIY a hybrid mattress. Every time I think I have a perfect build, we get excited, then either my husband or I wake up with an issue (numb hands, back pain, sore shoulders, sore knee, etc). Also, hubby feels like he’s sleeping in a ditch while I feel like I’m sleeping on the side of a hill. I currently have the following configuration:
1" SOL Firm Dunlop
8" L&P Quantum Edge Coils
1" SOL Soft Dunlop
3" Target Serene Foam Topper
2-3" Cozy Pure La Noodle Cuddle Top Topper
Everything is zipped up in a 15" Arizona Premium Mattress Quilted Bamboo Cover.
I am 5’3"/150 lb 100% side sleeper
Hubby is 5’10"/200 lbs 50%/50% side/back sleeper
We miss our old Beautyrest Jalisco Plush Eurotop that is in our guest room–it is very supportive and you only sink into it about 1-2 inches, instead of the 5-6" inches we are sinking into the DIY Hybrid. We changed mattresses because the old Beautyrest is caved in at the center of the mattress so it doesn’t work with two people in bed, plus it’s only queen size, we now sleep on a king.
We hate to give up the Cozy Pure topper because it makes the mattress feel puffy, like a eurotop mattress, instead of tabletop flat like it is with just foam. However, I am not sure how much this topper is contributing to the softness/sinkage so it may have to go.
We recently tried taking out the 3" serene foam and adding a 3" soft (19 ild) talaylay layer. It was WAY too soft that way. It was obvious that the talaylay was extremely contouring, but we sank into too much.
We also tried removing the 3" serene, and just putting the 1" SOL Firm, 1" SOL soft and Cozy Pure topper over the coils. It felt very firm, which helped with the sinkage, but I tossed and turned all night and was so stiff and sore I could barely get out of the bed the next morning.
I am considering purchasing a 2" or 3" medium dunlop layer to replace the 3" serene foam and placing as follows: 1" firm dunlop, 8" coils, 2" or 3" medium dunlop, 1" soft dunlop, Cozy Top topper. Any ideas if a 2" or 3" would get us closer to the support and softness we are looking for?
As you noticed, I’ve not included any memory foam configurations because (1) we are old and memory foam is hard for us to move around on, (2) we live in Texas where it is HOT and I can’t imagine adding anything to our mattress that will make it hotter.
So please, any suggestions people may have to help us have a soft surface because of side sleeping, BUT one that gives us the support we need to keep our spines aligned.
If our DIY mattress can’t be fixed, does anyone know a mattress that is close in support and feel to a Beautyrest Jalisco Plush Eurotop? I can’t find this exact mattress any more.
