Hi, after trying several mattresses over the last couple of years, it would be great to find a good fit. When the Angel bed stopped being comfortable after ten years, I tried a Talalay and Dunlop foam mattress, it was uncomfortable. Next was a Nectar bed, they had good reviews, but to me, the mattress felt cheap. It wasn’t comfortable, so I changed it for a Casper mattress. This mattress was pretty comfortable, but then I read the mattress was made with fiberglass, and this made me return it. Next was the Astoria mattress from Bloomingdale’s. I bought it from a discount mattress store and it was mail order, so I didn’t get to try it out first. It was originally expensive and I thought how bad can a mattress from Bloomingdale’s be? The answer is pretty bad, it’s latex with coils, but feels hard and lumpy. After a year, I’m ready to get something else.
My husband liked all the above mattresses, he’s 6 feet, around 300 pounds and a back sleeper. I’m 5’9 and around 170 and prefer my side, but most of these mattresses made my hip hurt after a couple of minutes, so I’m a back sleeper.
With Black Friday coming up, it’s a good time to buy a new mattress, but I’m not sure where to start. The budget is around 3000 for the right mattress and to be able to sleep on my side again. The higher end Helix mattress’s might work and they have a good return policy. I also like the idea of buying a hotel bed like The Ritz- Carlton or the Westin, but you can’t return them and they’re expensive, even on sale. I loved the Tempur Breeze soft, which I tried in a store, but hubs says there is no way we’re spending 5000 on a mattress. This leaves mail order and starting up the trial and return which my husband hates to do. Do you have any suggestions?
You’ve clearly put in the work testing beds — and honestly, most people don’t realize how different foams and builds really feel until they live with them. Given what you’ve tried and what you’re both describing, the Helix Elite is about as close as it gets to a “both of you can finally sleep” mattress in that budget.
Here’s why:
Zoned coils + dense foam layers: They give real spinal support for your husband’s back-sleeping and weight, while the plush top allows your hip to sink just enough when you roll to your side. That’s what helps you avoid that hip pressure you’ve been fighting.
No fiberglass, no gimmicks: All CertiPUR-US certified foams, breathable design, and excellent edge support — a big step up from Nectar or Casper.
Hotel-level comfort, but returnable: The Elite’s hybrid structure and quilted pillow top are what you’d expect from a $5k luxury brand (Ritz, Westin), but it’s made for home use — with a full 100-night trial and 15-year warranty through Yawnder.
Temperature balance: The Elite uses phase-change fabric and airflow channels that actually make a difference for couples with different sleep temps.
We handle everything locally through Yawnder, so delivery, setup, and even exchanges (if you need them) are simpler and faster than going direct.
Between comfort, build quality, and peace of mind, the Helix Elite hits that sweet spot you’ve been looking for — the “Tempur-Breeze feel without the Breeze price.”
I would be happy to recommend the right firmness option for you, just let me know. The Helix Elite has consistenly been a top seller in our store.
Hi! I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble finding a mattress that works well for you, I understand how important your sleep is and finding the correct mattress.
The Back Science mattress offers a structured lumbar support through its double zoned, patent pending Lumbar-Flex interlocking support that avoids unnecessary firmness that you will find in an overall firm mattress that may allow the spine not to dip but fails to properly contour the body. With too soft of a mattress, you won’t get that support you need to keep your spine properly aligned. Back Science was specifically tested with the Mattress Checker App to objectively verify that your postural alignment will be properly maintained in order to help prevent the lower back from sinking too deeply, while allowing more pressure relief on the shoulders. The Back Science Mattress is something Dr. Rick Swartzburg created after many years of seeing patients who suffered from back and shoulder issues due to poor mattress support and was developed by specifically performing hundreds of postural checks using the app to really ensure that it works.
Another difference comes from the quality of the coils and density of the foams used. With Back Science, we are using extremely high-quality, all U.S.A. made components, such as our over 1,000 count individually wrapped coils and is a true hybrid system that uses a Hypergel foam on the surface, which will give that weightless pressure relief, but with a much more buoyant/springy surface that differs substantially from that stuck feeling you can get from memory foam, but is far more contouring than a traditional quilted cover and therefore, more pressure relieving on the hips and shoulders. Another difference between Back Science and other companies is that Back Science offers a 365-night sleep trial, but even more importantly, we offer free customizations if needed to first try and solve the issue before returning or exchanging the mattress. That is part of Back Science’s success, though 9 out of 10 Back Science users love the way the mattress performs without any modifications. In your case, I really believe that the Back Science Series 3 would be perfect for relieving the pressure that you are experiencing. However, if modifications are needed, it is a simple exchange of comfort and/or zone layering via UPS that can insert into our proprietary GripLock™ modular cover system.

If you’re considering DLX, I’d probably lean toward either our Premier Hybrid or LatexLux models and since your husband’s a bigger guy, the LatexLux might be the better fit between the two.
Since you’ve already tried quite a few and haven’t found the right match yet, it might also be worth checking to see if there’s a good local factory-direct mattress maker near you. Sometimes there’s someone building high-quality mattresses right in your area that most people don’t even know about.
Would you mind sharing your ZIP code? I might be able to point you toward one nearby that’s worth a visit.
Thanks for the information yawnder, but we don’t live in San Diego. You mentioned the Helix Elite, I checked and there are two, the Sunset and Moonlight. Which would you recommend?
The Sunset is the softest and probably a bit too soft. I think the Moonlight would be the better choice. Also, we ship free to all 50 states and if you buy outside of CA you don’t pay any sales tax so you get extra savings on top of the Mattress Underground discount. Yawnder Moonlight Elite
I didn’t realize your store ships Helix, but the thing is, I’m waiting for Black Friday. It seems like the best time to get a deal. Do you still offer the 100 day return if it’s not as comfortable as expected?
Yes we offer a 120 night trial that starts the day you receive the mattress. If you decide you don’t like it you can return it, we just charge a $150 pick up fee but then do a full refund after that. If you want to try a different firmness or different mattress we offer from our store, it would be a free return and we would just charge/refund the difference but then it would be final sale after that. Also, we can give you the black friday discount now which will be 25% off. Here’s a link to a cart with the coupon code already added. If you want to change the model or remove the cool force layer, the coupon will still work https://yawnder.com/?share-cart=239502
We also offer a 100 day price match guarantee so if by chance the sale price on black friday is lower, we will refund the difference.
Thanks, and let me know if you have any other questions.
