First Latex Purchase

Greetings,

My wife and I have been sleeping on a used sealy posturepedic pillow top mattress and foundation that came with a solid wood frame, chest, and dresser for $350.00 that I bought 5 years ago while in college. If I knew what I know now, I would have never purchased a used mattress, but it was a good deal for what it was. Luckily, we had none of the problems that are often discovered with used mattresses. With that said, my wife and I have been talking about purchasing a new bed for over a year.

I was lucky enough to discover this website and read the pro’s and cons of the different mattress types. As others have stated, their minds were opened to the complexity of mattress buying. There are so many factors to consider and so I thank other members and phoenix for their experience and expertise in all things mattresses. We were intrigued by latex.

After spending a lot of time on mattressunderground, we contacted sleepEZ and Arizona mattress company asking for their suggestions for my wife (side/stomach; 235 pounds; 5’7") and I (side/stomach;160 pounds; 5’11"). Jeremy at SleepEZ suggested Medium-firm-extra firm for my wife and soft-medium-firm for me. Greg at Arizona Mattress Company suggested Firm for my wife and medium for me with 3" soft (#19) top for both sides. We ended up buying a King All Natural Talalay with bamboo cover from Greg at Arizona Mattress company on 12/22.

We purchased a Boyd Specialty Sleep frame support system from Amazon instead of Arizona Mattress company since it was cheaper and we didn’t need to pay for shipping. We ordered two Luna premium mattress covers from Amazon, even though we were close at purchasing a wool cover. I was intrigued by the crypton mattress cover, but since I didn’t see anything on using crypton fabric for a mattress protector on mattressunderground, we decided not to take the risk to give it a try.

We are now anxiously awaiting the order to ship. We will update everyone with this purchase when it arrives.

Greetings,

I just wanted to note that the Boyd Specialty Sleep frame is temporary until I have a chance to make our new bed frame. My garage is not heated, so the project will have to wait until spring or summer. The boyd was a cheap temporary option even though I understand the risk to a latex mattress that phoenix mentions elsewhere on these forums.

Hi Dubious,

Thanks for the sharing your comments and for letting us know what you ended up deciding. As you know I think highly of Arizona Premium/Mattresses.net and the quality/value of their mattresses and I think you certainly made a great choice.

Congratulations on your new mattress

I’m also looking forward to any comments and feedback you have the chance to share when you receive it.

As you mentioned … I am somewhat suspicious about the strength and durability of these types of lower cost flexible slat support systems (either because of the flexible slats, the plastic slat holders, or the strength of the legs which can sometimes bend) and some people may be able to feel the rigid center support beams where there is no flex in the support system through the mattress. They can also change the feel and response of a mattress compared to a rigid non flexing support system because of the additional flex under the mattress. Having said that … as a temporary support system it should be fine as long as any additional flex in the support system doesn’t affect you negatively in terms of PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences).

Phoenix

Phoenix,

Thank you for a reply. I am not sure how you keep up with all of these post. I didn’t think about how the frame may change ppp. My hope is it offers enough support. I guess we will find out when it gets set up.

Greetings All,

Our bed finally shipped! It will be here on Friday. I was a little surprised that it is coming from CA instead of AZ. I was also a little surprised by the shipment weight which is only 50 pounds. I was expecting at least 100 pounds for 9 inches of latex. So far, my only complaint would be how long it took to ship and the lack of communication regarding it. Although they said it would take 3.5 to 4 weeks to arrive at our door, which would have been Monday, after reading how quick other readers got their bed from SleepEZ, I was beginning to wonder.

Greetings,

I was mistaken by the 50 pounds. I needed to expand the UPS site to see that three separate packages shipped with a total weight of 160 pounds. Sorry for the error. It works out that this is coming on my day off. I think my wife would have troubles moving the boxes into the house.

Hi Dubious,

Thanks for the update … and I’m glad that it won’t be long until you can sleep on your new mattress

Phoenix

Greetings All,

Our new latex mattress from Arizona Mattress arrived on Friday. Our family had some appointments in the morning, so my fear was that we were going to miss the shipment. I always preferred to ship FedEx instead of UPS because FedEx gives a smaller window for delivery whereas UPS almost always says “by end of day”. When we returned, there were no boxes yet nor a “missed delivery” slip on our door.

While I was putting our kids to bed for a nap and when my wife was making dinner I heard a truck or bus, but there was no knock on the door nor the ring of the door bell. Once I got my kids down for a nap, I took a peak outside and noticed three large boxes sitting on my porch. While I was excited that it was delivered, I was also annoyed with UPS. I have never had luck with them. Why not ring the door bell or knock to let us know that our expensive (from my prospective) shipment had arrived.

This is what I saw

Needless to say, all of the boxes were beat up which didn’t surprise me after touring a UPS facility while in college, when I was seeking a part time job. I still can’t get over how much these boxes get thrown around.

With the kids still sleeping upstairs, all I could do was take each of the rolled up latex rolls out of the box and remove some of the tape that kept the roll closed.

Once our kids woke up I got to work. I first laid the cover over our metal frame/foundation.

I then unzipped and folded the sides down as instructed on countless video’s I have watched. I should note that there are no instructions that come with setting up the bed, however it seems to be the same for this style of latex mattress

What was not clear to me was which base layer was the medium and which one was firm. The first 6" latex layer that we pulled out of the wrapping was not labeled with the exception of N7 written on it. I should note that I was amazed at how quick latex bounces back compared to memory foam. Don’t get me wrong, I knew it would bounce back quick, but until you see it in person, I just couldn’t picture it. I would also like to note that there was no odor to the latex (which there shouldn’t have been) but I have read some reviews elsewhere of people claiming latex smells. If anything had a smell, it would have been the plastic bags that held the latex.

The latex looks yellower in the picture then it is in real life. I was having troubles getting the color right. In this picture you can see what must be air pockets. The second latex was stamped with the latex information. As you can see, this latex came from the Netherlands. This one is also labeled 26.7 making it the medium base layer. This was confirmed by touch as well.

Moving the latex wasn’t hard at all, nor was zipping the cover. The 3 inch comfort layer was lamented together into one piece. I honestly don’t really know the benefits of bamboo, but was a “free upgrade” with the 100 percent natural latex. Arizona Mattress states that the cover has “1.5 inches of pure natural Joma Wool for added comfort and flame resistance found in this natural component” but I do not see how this is actually 1.5 inches, not that it matters, as long as it provides the proper fire rating.

What was missing from the shipment was an invoice and warranty papers Greg from Arizona Mattress (mattresses.net) stated would be in the shipment. Once again, I am not too concerned since I have a copy of the invoice in my email and you can find the warranty information online. One thing I will have to get clarification on is their 60 day guarantee. After further review, it says that the mattress must be returned 60 days from the date of invoice. In my case, that means 32 of the days have already went by before we even received the mattress. While I don’t think we will need to return the mattress back, if this is indeed the case, this may be something prospective buyers need to be aware of since I believe this site recommends laying on the mattress for at least 30 nights.

At this time, my wife is very excited about her side. The jury is still out for me. I think I may like my wife’s harder side more then my medium. In either case, it is much better then our previous mattress. I will keep you all posted as time goes on and after I get some clarification from Arizona mattress.

Dubious

Hi Dubious,

Thanks for taking the time to share such detailed comments and feedback about your new mattress and for the pictures as well … I appreciate it

Just for clarification (and for the sake of others that read this) … their 60 day trial begins from the day you receive it not from the invoice date (see their FAQ here) and the details of the limited 20 year warranty for your mattress are at the bottom of the same page.

Phoenix

Phoenix,

Thank you for the clarification. In my head, “must be 60 days of receipt” translated into “must be 60 days from date of purchase or invoice date”. The word “receipt” is typically defined as “a piece of paper on which the things that you buy or the services that you pay for are listed with the total amount paid and the prices for each.” Of course the other definition that Merriam has is “that act of receiving something.” I was going to email Greg about it for clarification of the use of the word “receipt”, but since you chimed in, I don’t see the need to do that anymore.

Thank you again for your input and your site. I just referred several of our friends to your site who are also in the hunt for a mattress. I learned one was leaning towards purchasing a bed from Plushbeds while another was amazed at how expensive mattress are when he ventured into a mattress store. I guess the salesmen showed him a bed that was more than his car.

Dubious

Hi Dubious,

At least they didn’t show them a mattress that was getting closer to the price of a house (see here or here)
