Getting a New Mattress

My old mattress is no good anymore, so I’m getting a new one.
I’m living in a place where I need a smaller bed, so I’ll be getting a Twin XL.
I don’t expect to have it too long, but I’d still like to have quality materials. We spend a third of our lives sleeping after all.

I spent some time trying out the mattresses in my local area. Including one of the trusted vendors that was nearby.
I’m 6’2", weigh 175lb, and I’m primarily a side sleeper.
The combinations I like are
Poly/PCoil: As long as it has 3" of foam, it’s quite good.
Latex/PCoil: The ones I’ve tried have been very firm latex, but I believe it would work if it was softer.
Latex/Latex: The only one availiable was a medium-firm. Still comfortable. And again, I think it would be great if softer.
Gel/Latex: The most comfortable, almost fell asleep in the store!

I’ve attatched some pictures of me lying on a couple of mattresses.
The all latex one is 6" 36ILD Dunlop, with 2" 32ILD Talalay on both sides.

The Gel/Latex was unknown densities of 6" Dunlop with 2" gel on both sides.
It looks like the support is better on the full latex. My hips seem to sink in to much with the gel.

I’m leaning towards getting a full latex. It’s comfortable, supportive, and durable.
I belive a softer foam will work well, and I figure I can always add a memory foam topper if I want.

From the trusted vendors list, I think SleepEZ, flexuscomfort, Latex Mattress Factory, or Arizona Primary Mattress would work.
I’m leaning towards SleepEZ right now. Planning on giving them a call soon.

Welcome back Sceaduwe.

Glad to hear that you are on your way to replacing your 5-year-old mattress that is “no good anymore”(Thanks for sharing). Hopefully, your next mattress will be lasting you much longer than the current one. You are lucky to live in an area where you are able to locally test and look for a good quality Twin XL replacement mattress for your new place. Thanks for the photos for 2 of the mattresses you tested … as far as I can see they show good alignment while on the back. Not quite sure about the side …you seem to have wide shoulders and I am not sure if the misalignment I am noticing is due to the pillow being too high when on the side.

It’s great that you have such a wide selection of mattress types and materials to assess what you best like and do well with. That’s the best way to take the guesswork out of the equation and narrow down your options based on feel rather than theory at a distance. Knowing that quality is also an important factor I’d recommend to (if you haven’t already) brush up on the Mattress Durability Guidelines to select mattresses with components that will best maintain their qualities over time relative to your BMI and sleep style.

The “sinking in too far” with the gel may be an issue over time. Also, I would generally tend to avoid any mattress regardless of the name of the manufacturer where you aren’t able to find out the quality and durability of the materials inside it to make sure there aren’t any lower quality materials or “weak links” in the mattress relative to your BMI (as per the guidelines mentioned above). I agree with you on leaning towards getting a full latex mattress, both in terms of durability and comfort/support experience. As you’ve already noticed many of our trusted members are set up to do custom comfort/support builds and layer exchanges so you may discuss your options with them. They are all very knowledgeable and experienced in mattress-sleeper matches. If you’re already thinking you may need a soft topper, I’d lean more towards options that allow for layer exchanges so you can find the comfort layer that best meets your needs without having to fix a mattress with adding a topper. Sometimes finding a suitable topper for a mattress/ topper combo can be as difficult as finding an appropriate comfort/support base mattress.

Looking forward to any updates you may have a chance to share!

Phoenix

I ended up ordering a mattress from SleepEZ. A 10" Latex. 3" soft talalay on 3" medium dunlop on 3" firm dunlop.
This is what their online calculator gave me for my body weight, height, and sleeping position.
It’s what I was leaning towards getting, so I figured it’d be fine.
Just to double check, I give them a call. He said the calculator’s pretty accurate. The layer exchange rate is 10%, and the return rate is 4%.

I ended up getting the ten inch, because after talking, I found out that the size includes the quilting layer. Getting the ten inch will give me a top layer of 3 inches as opposed to 2 inches in the nine inch mattress. I’ve found polyfoam mattresses more comfortable with 3 vs 2 inches, so I figure it’ll be the same for latex. It will also help if I need to replace any of the layers later.

According to my size, he said the overall feel of the mattress should be Medium to Medium-Soft. If that’s too soft I can switch up the layers in the mattress. If it’s not soft enough I could always exchange the medium layer for another soft one.

I got a call the next day confirming my order. Estimated shipping date was the end of the week. It ended up shipping today, and should be here by Thursday.

Wide shoulders. I think the softer mattress will help with that.

Makes sense, it’s best just to get the mattress dialed in. SleepEZ does do layer exchanges if I end up needing it.

Hi again sceaduwe.

Congratulations on your new mattress purchase from Sleep EZ!
As you know they are a member of this site which means that I think very highly of them and that I believe they compete well with the best in the industry. You’ve certainly done your due diligence and confirmed by calling them whether or not the layers calculated on their websites would be a good fit for you.

I’m am not surprised to hear that you received such in-depth support from SleepEZ with deciding the best configuration for you.

I look forward to any future updates you may have once you’ve had a chance to sleep on it for a while and allow some time for you to adjust to the mattress and for the mattress to adjust to you.
