Getting closer to diy mattress build, need some advice please

It’s edge support/roll off that I’m concerned about, sitting on the edge isn’t an issue. The Caliber Edge I’m referring to has 2 outer edge layers of coils

If the Quantum or Caliber prevented a curving down at the edges that’s all I need, not to have the edge slough off since it’s so narrow. To give me some idea how do these pocket edge supports compare to a mattress with just a border rod? Thanks.

Not having a lip around the perimeter of your frame wouldn’t impact edge support - it would just keep your mattress from sliding side to side.

Having a border rod around the perimeter of a mattress will firm up the structural integrity of the product and assist a bit with a firmer edge, but increasing the thickness of the steel springs along the perimeter will help minimizing rollout more than a similar innerspring unit using a border rod but without the thicker steel springs around the perimeter.

I found https://www.nomaco.com/products/home-furnishings/foam inserts that go into the perimeter coils to strengthen the edge support (also I read a forum post where someone didn’t like the exposed springs along the perimeter edge and they sell what they call a duraband that goes around the perimeter to finish that.) I don’t think Nomaco sells to individuals; do you know anybody that sells these types of inserts as I think that would give me the extra edge support I’m looking for. Thanks.

Inserts won’t work on a pocketed coil spring unit. Those are made for spring units such as LFK, Continuous Coil, or Bonnel units. The extruded polyethylene is thin and as much for cosmetics as anything.

As for buying, look at the top menu of their web site. They have a link for where to buy. Call those people and they should be able to help.

I’ve found a mattress manufacturer in my area that can get the Quantum Edge Bolsa and it seems that they can manufacture from a wide variety of materials. Do you know what fabric is used as the cover on the Beautiful? It says stretch knit 450-480 Gram Weight fabric 98% polyester and 2% Elastan. Is there a more basic name for a fabric like this? How does it compare to the 40/60 blends? I did go back and check out the edge support on the Beautiful and it was surprisingly ok, I wonder how much the layers being glued together affects that?

The cover is 98% polyester, 2% elastin, just as you stated. That’s the most basic description of it you can get. It’s a flexible covering. I don’t know how it would compare to 40/60 blends (you don’t state 40/60 blend of what type of material). Each type of fiber has it’s own specific properties and how it is combined, woven and the amount of material actually used (gram weight) which will all impact the overall feel and hand.

Gluing the layers doesn’t really have much of an impact on the edge reinforcement.

The only fabric I have a sample and specs on states 40% viscose from bamboo/ 60% pes natural/limon 265g. It seems like the type of material you find with a lot of topper covers. has bamboo logo all over it. I have a topper from Soft Heaven and it states 40% Organic Cotton - 60% Polyester, I don’t know the gram weight but it’s thicker than the bamboo sample. Neither are super stretchy compared to the Beautiful which I see I can buy a replacement cover for, kinda pricey and I haven’t heard back yet from the local manufacturer who says he has fabrics like that except the 2% is either spandex or tencel. He is having difficulties getting the pocket coil I wanted, probably because he doesn’t have it in stock and may not want to buy a case of them for one customer, whatever, I’ll see what happens. I do have to say from spending a good amount of time laying on the Beautiful (there was no scent, it was coming from the topper they had recently gotten in.) This is a nice mattress, it is super soft with no pressure points when side sleeping and also is supportive when I’m in a more sitting up position like I would be in while reading. I’m impressed that the Talalay can be so soft but at the same time so supportive. If the guy can’t come thru with the pocket coils I am just going to build a diy of the Beautiful, if the layers weren’t glued together (and it’s $1,000 more than to build it) I might just consider buying it as the store selling it is literally 4 blocks from me.) I also have developed a preference to Radium’s Superior Blended Talalay over Talalay Global’s blend, this is something that complicates matters as Radium’s Ilds are different from TGs so the Beautiful’s 6" 36 core, 3" 24 and 3" 19 has to be translated into either a 34 ild core in Radium or 40 ild, a 25 which I’ve been told is closer to a 28 in TG or go with a 22. The 19 isn’t an issue as they are both have a 19. There’s also the feel difference in that the Beautiful is glued layers which makes it firmer. What do you think, being an owner of the Beautiful as well as selling it, would you suggest the firmer core of 40 and the 25 (which I guess may feel more like 28) under the comfort layer of 19 which I’m fine with. I have some trepidation that I may smell the latex, down here in FL these concrete block buildings really hold in everything and 12" of latex in my rather small bedroom has the potential to be a problem. I’ve read many people’s threads that even after a couple of years the latex smell didn’t go away, I’m thinking it must be a batch by batch issue. I kinda hope this manufacturer can get the pocket coils because then I can put an inch of foam on ea side put it in a 2 sided cover then get a 3"19 ild topper and be done at half the price of diying a Beautiful mattress. Thanks.

If you’re looking to replicate the feel of the Beautiful, then I suggest purchasing the exact same latex (blend , thickness, ILD) from the same producer, which would be Talalay Global. Gluing the layers vs. loose layers won’t make as much of a difference as cover chosen or ILD variations. Similar ILDs from Radium and TG have different feels (as I and others have been previously noted here on the forum). Sensitivity to latex “odors” tends to be quite individual and slight. I wouldn’t take someone else’s “negative” odor experience and suppose that it would be yours, any more than I would take someone else’s “positive” experience and expect it to be yours as well. Larger variations in odor tend to be found in natural Dunlop versus Talalay, but what odor there is tends to dissipate quite quickly.

Yes, I agree with you that going with the same manufacturer at the same ilds etc is the best way to get as close a feel as what I got in store. My issue is with TG’s use of so much filler
“The filler that LI uses is feldspar and it is added at about 17% (by weight)”
“Blended Talalay is usually a 70% synthetic / 30% natural blend yes although latex international also uses a fairly high percentage of filler so the latex content is only a percentage of the latex in the mattress” "it does have some negative effect on durability and a positive effect on performance in the amounts they use and has a positive effect on cost as well and while it may not be the “most durable” version of latex that they could produce … it is the most “cost effective”

THIS is what’s put a cloud over my Talalay Global Latex purchase. I’ve been able to speak directly with Radium who says that they don’t add filler because of that reason. TG on the other hand has never answered any inquiries. The other post I can’t find right now said that the feldspar over time abrades the latex breaking it down, which matches the above, it performs well for what they consider long enough, then breaks down. Do you have any knowledge to the contrary as it’d be easiest to go with the same as what I’ve tested. I’ve been reluctant to bring this up but it’s the only way I might be able to get some light shed on this subject. Thanks.

If you don’t want to use a Talalay latex with a filler then your choice is Radium (or go to China  ) . I would contact them and use their suggestions for the closest to the TG latex that you like. The production people with whom I’ve spoken at TG state the use of fillers are at a level that doesn’t impact performance, but of course does help reduce cost. There’s nothing wrong if you want to eschew fillers. Personally I don’t have a concern with either product.

I can get a replacement mattress cover for the Beautiful but it’s kinda pricey at $250 (can you get one cheaper?) but for that price there’s a nice double knit %100 organic cotton 340gsm, they claim it’s quite stretchy, do you think it’d be anywhere near as conforming as the Beautiful’s Polyester one?

Replacement covers from PTB can be pricey, as you have to get the entire cover with the non-skid so the zipper matches up. I don’t retail separate covers from various manufacturers - only replacements for damage from the brands I carry for my own customers.

I wouldn’t know how what you described might match to a PTB cover. The best way to compare would be to ask for a sample of the material from the retailer. You unfortunately can’t tell either the hand or the feel of the cover from information such as that you mentioned.

What are the ild layers in the Beautiful? I am finding conflicting information. I thought it was 19, 24, 36 but some places I find 14 ild instead of 19 as the top layer?

See this post #7.

I’d decided on Leggett & Platt’s 8" Quantum Edge pocket coil unit (un-zoned) but was having trouble finding it, especially since I needed a txl. Well L&G have been very helpful and have ordered some. Once I get a chance to lay on it, I’ll go from there what kind of foams, cover etc.

Ok, they have got the pocket coil unit in and I’d like to do a 2" latex on ea side but wonder if it’s going to bunch up. What do you think, is it ok to put the latex (I’m thinking 19 ild talalay) top and bottom with the 8" pocket coil unit in the middle and use a zippered mattress cover?

Hi Alpharalpha.

Great to hear that L&P were so helpful to you and that you found the “un-zoned” version of the Quantum Edge. Your design is similar to a mattress sold by one of our trusted members, Arizona Premium Mattresses “ultimate” hybrid, but you are using 2" of latex on the coils, vs. 3" of latex in the AZP model here. I would not be worried about the latex “bunching up… latex has a high coefficient of friction and under normal circumstances it stays in place quite well. If any flipping or moving the mattress causes it to go out of place, than you can reposition it by opening the cover and placing a small partial “wave” through the layer. As far as your design goes, I am not sure why you’d want go with a 2-sided mattress using a comfort layer ILD of Talalay latex on both sides. The 2” of 19 ILD Talalay will work well for the comfort layer (top), but is ill-suited to be used as a base foam, as it does not have sufficient firmness as a base layer material. You may want to rethink this part of your DIY design and perhaps inquire ask Arizona Premium expert here. They have a great deal of DIY experience and would be able to pinpoint any weaknesses in your design.

I hope this helps

Yes, Leggett & Platt really came thru, they didn’t have that unit in stock and it was difficult to get, especially in a txl. Took 3 months. Very impressed.
I was all set to put 1" of Foamorder’s Everflex 24 ild on each side and then put a 3" two sided 19 ild talalay topper over it. The 2" talalay ea side idea was just a recent thought. It’s all a process. Exciting to actually be having it start to come together. You’ve been a great help, Thank you.

Hi Alpharalpha.

That’s impressive,… I am glad that they are so responsive and follow through.
Good luck with your DIY and let us know how it goes!

Hello, Leggett & Platt don’t sell to consumers directly so there’s a mattress manufacturer, also very helpful. Currently he’s picked it up and I have the option of him dropping it off as is, or he can make it into a mattress. I am divided here. My plan was to buy the foam and put it all in a zippered 2 sided mattress cover
https://uploads.mattressunderground.com/outside/36408/sailboat-mattress.jpgbutas you’ve pointed out with the diy route there’s more of a chance of error; I am concerned maybe it won’t fit properly between them making a cover and my putting everything in it. But on the other hand the ability to customize it and be able to open it up if I need to is preferable. I’m just going to go with a 1" layer of poly foam on each side of the mattress and then put my topper over that. They use a 2.2 lb hd foam and if I buy my own it’d be hr 24 from Foam Order
https://uploads.mattressunderground.com/outside/36408/FCG126HR4225rev1.pdf.It’stemptingto have them finish the mattress since they are in the business and everything should fit, but then I give up the ability to customize it if I wanted to change anything. What are your thoughts on this?
