Getting Insurance to cover expense

My better half was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer 2 months ago. Shocking in that neither of us are smokers and not around second hand smoke. With her difficulty in breathing it helps her to sleep in the recliner. We would like to get one of the memory foam beds that can adjust but with the bills rolling in from hospitals, etc we are hoping there is a way that insurance will cover it.

I know that it depends alot on the insurance coverage (we have United Health) and I saw your past 2 posts from 2014 1nd 2015 but hoping there may be some new insights? Since it is not technically a “durable medical supply” would a prescription from the Doctor even work?

Hi Dutch,

I’m sorry to hear about your partner’s condition and I can only imagine all the many difficult issues that you are dealing with. My thoughts are with you.

For the sake of others that are reading this that are facing similar circumstances I’m guessing that one of the two posts you are referring to is this one in 2014 but I’m not sure which is the second one in 2015 that you referred to.

The specifics of different health care plans are outside the scope of my research and knowledge so my best suggestion would be to talk with your doctor or other health care specialist and with your health insurance provider who would be much more knowledgeable than I am about the specifics of what could be covered and what couldn’t.

It would seem somewhat likely to me that the adjustable bed would be covered if sleeping reclined helps her and your doctor will prescribe it but I don’t know if a specific mattress would be covered.
