Help Looking For a New Mattress

Hi all!

My wife and I are looking for a new king size mattress.

Background:
I am 5’11" and 175 lbs. Back issues. I am a back and stomach sleeper. I prefer firmer beds. I tend to sleep hot, so I usually stick my feet out.
My wife is 5’1" and 110 lbs. Neck issues. Wife is a side sleeper. Wife prefers softer beds for comfort.
Our current mattress is a King Size Saatva Classic Mattress in Luxury Firm.
We have a king size bed frame and a springless boxspring (mattress foundation) with slats are spaced 2 3/4" apart.

We really like our current mattress, but my mom recently moved in with us (temporarily) and she has been sleeping on guest bed which has a terrible mattress and has asked for a new one. I’d prefer to move our mattress into the guest bed and get a new mattress for our room as opposed to buying a new mattress for our guest bed and then in another ~5 years have to buy a new mattress for our bed anyway.

As I was looking online for a new mattress I stumbled across The Mattress Underground and while I have read a lot of the content, posts, and other websites like Reddit and Youtube I am feeling overwhelmed and stuck with analysis paralysis with all of the many decisions.

I realize I could just buy another Saatva Classic Mattress in Luxury firm, but was wondering if there are better options out there. Our budget is $5k or less, but ideally closer to $2.5k or less would be better.

Things that matter to us:
Sleep quality (especially since I have continuous lower back pain and my wife frequently has neck pain from sitting at her desk at work)
Comfort
Allergens (I have allergies, so we generally wash our sheets every 1-2 weeks)
Environmentally friendly materials (I have been looking at mattresses made with entirely cotton and/or wool but am concerned with whether or not they would provide the same support and spinal alignment)

Using The Mattress Underground’s posts and trusted members section I am considering the options below.
Arizona Premium Mattress - King Ultimate Hybrid Coil Latex Mattress
My Green Mattress - Natural Escape Organic Mattress
The Clean Bedroom - Naturepedic Azure Organic Hybrid Mattress (this one is outside of the price range I listed, but it is one we have looked at)
CozyPure - 12" Organic EMBRACE Mattress (Organic Latex)
White Lotus Home - Organic Cotton & Wool Dreamton Mattress (not a Trusted Member, but own one of their pillows and they seem like a quality brand)

Located in Minneapolis and did not see most of these brands/mattresses available at local sleep stores, so wanted to start here to get an idea.

Looking for ANY feedback and recommendations (not limited to the options we are currently considering).

Thank you for reading this and would appreciate any help from this forum’s experts!

BackScience 2 or 3 for the win! I have the 2 and love it!

Seems live DLX Premier is good because you can customize each side. I have never tried a DLX.

Hey Dabbit!

Welcome to our Mattress Forum. Minneapolis was my home for 7 years and I even taught in Minneapolis Public Schools for a while. While I sure miss those summers, I would gladly never have another MN winter. Also, sending lots of warm thoughts that way given the current political climate.

Now, onto mattresses!

The fact that you both genuinely like the Saatva Classic Luxury Firm is valuable information. That tells us a lot. It means a responsive coil support system with a “medium-firm leaning firm” feel and some cushioning on top is already working reasonably well for both of you. For you, it’s giving enough support for back and stomach sleeping without collapsing under your hips. For your wife, it’s apparently not too firm for side sleeping, which is often the harder balance to strike.

So the question isn’t “what’s completely different and better,” but rather “is there something built with higher-quality or more durable materials, or more refined comfort, that stays in that same general comfort zone.”

Also, your foundation is solid. Slats at 2¾" apart on a rigid, springless box are well within what most manufacturers recommend, so you can rule out support issues underneath.

In terms of materials and allergies, it’s understandable to be drawn to cotton, wool, and latex. Wool and latex in particular tend to do well for temperature regulation and are naturally resistant to dust mites and mold, which can be helpful for allergy sufferers. The main caveat is that “all cotton and wool” mattresses without a strong internal support system can feel very different from what you’re used to and may not provide the same long-term spinal alignment, especially for back and stomach sleepers.

Looking at the specific options you mentioned:

The Arizona Premium Ultimate Hybrid is probably the closest philosophical cousin to your Saatva, but with more transparent materials and the option of latex instead of polyfoam in the comfort layers. That can be a plus for durability and responsiveness, and it gives you a bit more resilience and pushback, which often helps with lower back support and sleeping hot. The key would be choosing the right latex firmness so your wife’s shoulders and neck aren’t pushed up too much.

My Green Mattress Natural Escape is well made and uses quality materials, but it tends to be on the firmer side overall. Some side sleepers (especially lighter ones like your wife) can find it a bit too firm in the shoulder area unless they’re very tolerant of pressure.

Naturepedic’s Azure is a nice design and very modular, but as you’ve already noticed, you’re paying a premium for the brand, certifications, and showroom experience. From a pure support and comfort standpoint, it’s not doing something fundamentally unavailable elsewhere at a lower price.

CozyPure’s all-latex models can work very well for people who like a buoyant, supportive feel, but they do feel distinctly different from an innerspring hybrid like the Saatva. Some couples love that change, others don’t…especially stomach sleepers who are sensitive to how the pelvis is held up.

White Lotus Home makes quality, thoughtfully sourced products, but their cotton and wool mattresses are typically better suited to people who already know they like a firmer, more futon-like feel. Given your back issues and your wife’s neck concerns, I’d be cautious unless you can try one in person.

If I were helping you narrow this down, I’d suggest staying in the hybrid category and looking for:
– A pocketed coil support core with good zoning or inherent firmness
– A comfort system that allows some surface softness for your wife without compromising your lumbar support
– Materials that breathe well and don’t rely on thick layers of lower-density foam

Given everything you’ve shared, something like a latex-hybrid with customizable firmness on each side (or at least a carefully chosen medium/firm comfort layer) feels like a logical next step rather than a radical departure from what already works.

Hi Dabbit,

Welcome!

The only one I can speak to is Naturepedic. Advice: wait for a sale; you can often save 15-20%, which is sizable with a mattress like the Azure.

Also, 10 years down the road, if the mattress needs to be tweaked, you can simply buy one or two components rather than the whole mattress - saves a lot down the road.

Best of luck with your search! Call or message us if we can help.
