hybrid mattress

I am looking at a mattress made by golden mattress co, and I can not get a grip on the details provided by the company as to density, weight, etc . The mattress in question is the Gel-Tex Plush, also they do not state that the components are all made in USA. any help you could give would be greatly appreciated, I have read some very mixed reviews/opinions on this site.

                                                  Thanks, Ed

Hi saled,

You can see the specs of the Gel-Tex Plush on the Golden site here and they are one of the few manufacturers that includes the density of all their foams.

From top to bottom it has 1.5" of 4 lb gel memory foam, 2" of 4 lb memory foam, 2" of latex, and a 6" 2 lb polyfoam support core.

There are no obvious weak links in the mattress and if you have done some careful and objective testing on the mattress (using the testing guidelines in the tutorial post) then it would be well worth considering unless you are in a higher weight range where I would consider reducing or minimize the use of 4 lb medium density memory foam in a mattress.

Thanks for the response, I still have 2 concerns, they do not say that the different layers of foam are US made, which seems to matter. 2/ I am 6ft. 4in. tall and 195lbs. is that heavy?

                                    Thanks again, Ed

Hi saled,

I normally use about 200 lbs as a rough guideline for “heavier weights” but it will also depend on each person’s body type, where their weight concentrations are, and their sleeping positions which along with the thickness of the softer foams in the comfort layers will all affect how much they compress the top layers of a mattress which in turn will affect how quickly it softens under the heavier or more “weight concentrated” parts of the body. There is more about the many factors that can affect the useful life of a mattress relative to each person in post #4 here.

4 lb memory foam is a “medium” quality/density memory foam and it would be a suitable material for most people in your weight range. Many people also prefer the “feel” of slightly lower density memory foams (in the range of 4 lbs) vs higher density (like 5 lbs or higher) because it’s often a little less temperature sensitive, softer, and faster responding but it’s also less durable than higher density memory foam so there would be a tradeoff between comfort, “feel” and performance of the mattress and it’s durability.

Like most of the Golden mattresses … they are usually in a good quality/value range for their price range (higher density foams are generally more costly) and for most people it would be “durable enough” but it won’t be as durable as a mattress that uses less 4 lb memory foam and more memory foam in a higher density range.

They do use US made polyfoam and memory foam as far as I know (for example their Bioflex is made by Flexible Foam which is a US foam producer).
