Ikea ESPEVÄR foundation

Hey guys,
Bringing this thread back from the dead as the product has either changed or people didn’t understand it in its entirety.

The espevar is meant to be used with drop in 3.5" (8cm) Bonnell coil pack called the engavagen.

So this set up is actually Bonnell coils on top of slats. It’s very intriguing and I’m wondering in its ideal for all foam set ups and would allow for a shorter mattress since you’ve got 3" of Bonnell coils as a foundation. Also would pocket coils on top of Bonnell coils be a bad idea?

Hi cheepomcgee,

In my experience, I have not seen an issue with putting pocket coils over Bonnel coils. Other manufacturers in the past have used this basic construction, especially since the advent of so many high quality, but low height pocket coil materials on the market.

Regarding your question is this about this set up being good for all foam? I assume you mean getting a foam mattress to put over the Bonnell / slats foundation. This combination would work as a base for a mattress. But it is hard to say exactly if it would allow a shorter height mattress. This depends on your specific needs. That said, generally speaking, a good quality slat foundation with just over 3" Bonnell coils - in theory, this would allow you have less height with your comfort layers, possibly finding something in a 6", 7" or 8" construction.

Am I understanding your question correctly?

Thanks,

Yes, I’m wondering if a 6" Dunlop and 2 or 3" Talalay top layer works on this set up. I’ve been told all latex is best on a flat surface so curious what the experts think.

Would it be a good idea to have 1-2" of firm poly as a base layer to sit on top of the Bonnell coils?

Hey Cheepomcgee,

I think the polyfoam over the coils is probably a good idea, I have not seen or felt this product in person, so hard for me to know specifically.

You can use the 6" Dunlop or the talalay toppers, be cautious as you will still need transition/support layers and comfort layers. Many times a good Dunlop core will give both of these needs in one core, but it depends on what your needs are.

I am sure you have read these links but just wanted to make sure I mention comfort layers overview and putting the layers together.

Thanks

It looks like Ikea sells two versions of this base here in the states, one with the coil packs and one without. The all inclusive version seems like it’s about 20-30 bucks cheaper than buying them separately, but there is a hundred dollar premium for buying the coil packs.

If you’re looking at a 6" Dunlop core with another 3" of talalay on top, you could just put the 9 inches of latex inside of a cover directly on the slats, or if you want to then buy whatever coils you want and use just a single set of coils in your mattress build. It would probably be easier to dial everything in and your sheets would completely cover the mattress down to the platform with no bed skirt required.

If you want to use the coil packs for the challenge or for style then it’s of course a matter of personal preference.

Hey savantstrike,

Thanks for the additional info on these products., and good points.
