Hi naomasa,
There are three basic types of foam which are polyfoam, memory foam, and latex foam and they re all very different. The choice between them is really a preference choice and becoming familiar with the pros and cons of each so you know which type of foam you prefer is an important part of choosing between them. Almost all mattresses have some type of foam in them and in most cases the weak link of a mattress is the use of lower quality foams (usually lower density memory foam or polyfoam) in the comfort layers which tends to soften and break down much more quickly than higher quality materials.
As you can see in the guidelines in this article (one of the links in the “read first” post) … Serta is one of the major brands which I would tend to avoid no matter where they were made. The local manufacturers I mean are generally smaller independent manufacturers that are open and transparent about the materials in their mattresses and either sell them factory direct or through smaller sleep shops that are more focused on educating their customers than selling them. No matter which manufacturer makes your mattress though … if you don’t know the quality of the materials inside it then you can’t make any meaningful comparisons with other mattresses because every type of material has lower and higher quality (more durable) versions.
There isn’t a specific forum list for Bowling Green so I’ll list a few of the better options or possibilities here and then add to them as I have the chance to do a more complete search in the area. I’ve also included the brands they carry that I would include in your research that are most likely to be able to provide you with the information you need about the quality of the materials in their mattress.
http://www.bandymattress.com/ Bowling Green, Glasgow, Owensboro, KY. Local factory direct manufacturer that makes a range of mattresses including gel memory foam, innersprings, and latex hybrids. Good people and committed to making good quality and value mattresses for their local customers.
http://bghomefurnishings.com/ Bowling Green, KY. Factory Showroom for a wide range of Bowles and Lady Americana mattresses made by Bowles Mattress Company in Jeffersonville, IN that can also be good quality and value.
http://www.trentbedding.com/ Bowling Green, KY. Retailer that carries Southerland and Solstice mattresses both of which are regional wholesale manufacturers that can sometimes be better than average quality and value.
http://www.miraclemattress.net/ Bowling Green, KY. Retailer that carries Dutch Craft mattresses which are Amish made regional wholesale manufacturers that also tend to be good quality and value.
http://marksmattress.com/ Hopkinsville and Madisonville, KY (and others farther away). Carries their own line of private label memory foam and latex mattresses called Sleep Natural that may include some better quality/value options. I would avoid the major brand and liquidation mattresses that they also carry.
More to come as I have the chance to add them.
