Is it black mould? - NEW Ikea Morgongava mattress mark

My husband and I have just purchased the Morgongava mattress from ikea. It is currently airing out because I found it to smell very strong of wool. This normally doesn’t bother me but after trying to sleep on it the first night we decided to let it air out a bit because I was getting itchy and burning eyes, nose throat and chest.

I was initially worried that perhaps the wool has been chemically treated/cleaned which was causing my reaction. However I am now more concerned with the black fuzzy mark I found on the latex slab after unzipping the cover.

From what I’ve read latex should be mould resistant and could also come with some discolouration from the baking process (dunlop). This mark looks much darker and larger than any images I’ve been able to find online.

Does anyone have any experience with either mould or discolouration on latex slabs?

Also has anyone with the Morgongava noticed a strong smell after opening the box. If so for how long?

Thank you!!! Any help is greatly appreciated.

(I am also in communication with Ikea)

It’s quite normal that latex has some discoloration or dark marks on the latex but a picture would certainly be helpful. While anything is possible … it’s not likely that there is mold or mildew on the latex and it’s more likely to be from the “baking” process.

Yes … there have been a number of people that have mentioned a strong smell with the Morgongava (see posts #14, 18, 21, and 22 in this topic for other members that have mentioned it and some suggestions that may be helpful.

Hi latex-mold,

I added the picture to your post but I just realized that I didn’t comment on it.

I can certainly see the damaged area and the dark area underneath it but I really can’t tell for sure what it could be.

As far as I know the Morgongava is just a single layer of latex but it also looks like the surface with the dark area is flat and even so it’s possible that the dark area is some kind of adhesive that was used to glue a separate layer on top. Does it look like there are two layers in the mattress?
