Do I have this right: that other things being equal, the total thickness you need is related to your weight? (Lighter people can use a thinner mattress?)

In basic terms yes but there are also a few other reasons people may choose a thicker mattress. Thickness could be related to weight, sleeping positions, and also the design goals of the mattress (some people may want 2" or 3" of softer latex over a firmer core for example while others would do very well without it and prefer to just sleep directly on a 6" core with a quilted cover of the right type of latex and in the right firmness level for their needs and preferences).
