lattex mattress wool layer or second latex layer which is best

This site is wonderful . I am in Australia and I have found a lot to help me out searching for a mattress . I have found some mattress manufactors about an hour away from home .
Before I visited them on the weekend I wanted to find out a couple of things pleae .
Some have a wool layer on top of the latex .
Others have a latex core with a another latex layer on top . ie a 8 inch medium density latex gold core then a 2 inch firm latex layer on top . This mattress they tell me is flippable .
Another by the same company has the same core but a softer 2 inch latex layer on top . Also flippable . They were telling me that the firmer layer is better in summer and then can flip the mattress for a softer feel in winter as its warmer as you sink into it . The fabric though around the mattress was a synthetic . They could also make the softer layer into a pillowtop or incorporate it into the mattress as one piece .
I was a bit concerned about the fabric as I thought that wool blends, cottons were better .
Other manufactors had about 1cm of foam in the quilting layer , does this affect the heat issue ?
These manufactors I had spoken to dont have any foam on the bottom or sidewalls .
A large chain store have a latex mattress but in Australia there only has to be 30% of latex in a mattress to be called a latex mattress .They only have 3 inchs of latex in the mattress but it is double the price of the others and the rest is foam .

Which is best a wool layer or a second layer of latex ?
Which is the best fabric covering the whole mattress ?

Thanks

These are some of the mattress I have been looking at
The plain latex mattress is $1499
The two with the 2nd layer of latex are $1899

I was concerned about the polyester knit fabric

http://www.sandman.com.au/mattresses.html#page5

http://www.sandman.com.au/mattresses.html#page4

Another place was Slumberworld Geelong
They have 4 types of latex mattresses
A firm, medium, soft and super soft
They range from $1699 to $2599 for the mattress
They tell me the firm and medium can be flipped .
It has a cotton blend fabric
It has a small amount less than 1 cm of foam in the quilting
They tell me with the firm and medium its the different core .

What is the purpose of having the foam side wall and foam on the bottom

Sandman factory have given me the following info
This mattress is $1899, $150 extra for the wool .

just wanted to reconfirm please that they were a 8 inch latex gold mattress with a 2 inch comfort layer on top . Is the 2 inch comfort layer a dunlop latex gold of a different density/ firmness ? Or a talalay comfort layer ?

The 2 " later is the same latex … just a different firmness. We could call it a Dunlop latex as the company that own Latex Gold bought out Dunlop. Now they use Dunlop to distribute their product.

Also is the 8 inch core a medium or firm density ?.
The 8" core is a medium
.
That there was no foam in the mattress and that they are flippable
.
The only foam used is in the quilting layer …it is minimal at 9 mm
.
Also do any or the mattresses have a wool comfort layer ?

We have just introduced a Pure Australian Wool cover with pure Australian wool in the quilting. It would be possible to put it on the latex. You would need to add a further $150.00 to the price.

Jarrod I see that the cover is a polyester knit fabric, do you have a cotton or bamboo knitted breathable fabric alternative for the mattress please ?

The answer above fixes both problems

I wanted to ask this forum is there a difference in having the wool in the mattress or to have a wool underlay on top of the mattress
Some of the queen size wool underlays in Australia are expensive starting at $400 for minijumbuk up to the $700 topline .

http://www.backtosleep.com.au/Product/Catalogue/mattresses/natural-series-monaco-tight-top-mattress

This mattressis $3699 are is through bedtosleep through chiropractors

•Stretch Knit Bamboo fabric yields and conforms to the body enhancing the overall comfort while providing a similar softness to silk. Bamboo is antibacterial and antifungal with excellent wicking properties
•Wool/Cashmere blend has thermal properties that keep you cool in summer & warm in winter with comfort foam for pressure relief
•Talalay Latex provides superior conforming comfort and pressure relief
•Natural Latex ensures superior support with pressure relieving comfort. Naturally antimicrobial and extremely durable
•Performa Edge offers a larger sleeping surface & prevents border breakdown
•Ultrashield creates a healthy sleeping environment by inhibiting bacteria and fungus growth

it works out a lot more expensive than the one above for $2349 in the previous post .I see their comfort layer is the talalay latex, but would there really be much more difference in this talaly layer and a dunlop softer comfort layer

Hi scamo,

You probably have more questions than I could answer in a single post and I would suggest first reading some of the information in the mattresses section of the site which will provide you with most of the information you are asking about. The overviews are usually the best place to start and then the individual pages in each section are good for the areas where you are looking form more detailed information.

There are very few black and white “better and worse” choices with mattresses and the choice of materials and your “which is best” questions are really matter of personal preferences. Each choice usually involves tradeoffs where you gain something and give something up. Personal testing on different types of materials if they are available locally is usually the most effective method of knowing which type of material and mattress layering works best for you.

You are going in a good direction and dealing with local manufacturers is a great way to go because they are generally very knowledgeable about the mattresses they make and the materials they use.

Once you have read some of the more detailed information on the site and/or done some local testing to see which combinations works best for you (again remember most of this is personal preferences) … then if you have some more specific questions that haven’t been covered then by all means feel free to post them here (a few at a time would be helpful :)).

Phoenix

Thanks Phoenix .
Yes my head is spinning from all the information .
I have tried a solid latex with a wool layer but it felt too hard . The other mattresses in town had lots of foam in them . I am in a smaller town . There are manufactors about 2 hours away and then some others one hour away in another city . I dont want to drive aimlessy between them . I have been ringing them hoping to narrow them down to a couple .
I will try some solid latex cores with either a firmer layer or softer latex layer over the top over the weekend .
Would a wool underlay act the same way as a latex matress with a wool layer in keeping you cool . If I went ahead and got the two layer latex and put a wool underlay over the top ?

Would around $2000 sound reasonable

Hi scamo,

Don’t forget that latex can range from very soft to very firm so the softness or firmness is a variable that isn’t part of a latex mattress. In general … the most popular latex mattresses would have a 6" core (made up or one or more layers) with several layers on top of this ranging from just a quilting layer over the 6" core to separate comfort layers that can vary in their thickness and softness. The covers will also have a wide range of different types from a stretch knit unquilted cover (which will allow more of the feel of latex to come through) to a cover that is quilted with either polyfoam or wool (which will modify the feel of the latex). Wool quilting is very breathable and temperature regulating and can also act as a fire barrier. If there is polyfoam in the layers or quilting above the latex … i would make sure that it wasn’t more than an inch or so. Once you reach about 2" or more of polyfoam above the latex … you are sleeping more on polyfoam than you are on latex and you would have all the softening issues that are connected to lower density soft polyfoam.

This is a great idea. No matter what the quality of the materials in a mattress … it still needs to have the layering that provides you with good PPP (Pressure relief, Posture and alignment, and Personal preferences). A latex mattress that is suitable for one person with a certain body type, sleeping positions, and preferences may not work at all for someone else who may need completely different layer combinations.

I’m not sure what you mean by a wool underlay but if it’s the same thing as a wool mattress protector or a wool mattress pad or topper (each of these is thicker than the last) then they would provide you with the benefits of the wool that was in them similar to a quilted cover yes. A wool mattress protector or a thinner wool mattress pad would be the rough equivalent of the type of quilting that most manufacturers would use in the quilting of their cover. A certain amount of wool in a cover would have a similar function and benefit to the same amount of wool in a mattress protector, mattress pad, or topper.

This would depend on the size of the mattress, the content of the mattress, and it would also depend on local prices (I’m not familiar with the prices in Australia).

For example a 6" latex mattress with a single layer in it would not be the same as a mattress that had a 6" core with one or more layers of latex over it. In the same way a mattress that was finished with a quilted layer on both sides would be expected to be more than a similar mattress that was only finished on one side. The best way to determine “value” would be to compare mattresses with similar layering and a similar cover to each other so for example you would compare a mattress with a 6" support layer and a 2" comfort layer with a cotton cover quilted with wool to others that had similar construction. You will probably be quite surprised at the difference in prices between different manufacturers that use similar construction and materials (just like in North America) and when you compare apples to apples in this way it becomes much clearer which has better value.

Also don’t forget that there are different types of latex which are more or less expensive and this needs to be taken into account as well. You can read more about the different types of latex in this article.

When you are talking with different manufacturers or retailers on the phone … it may be a good idea to find out a general description of the latex mattresses they carry (such as a 6" core and a 3" comfort layer or an innerspring with a latex comfort layer etc) so you have a general sense of what they make or sell.

Phoenix

Hi Phoenix
thank you for your time .
Can I just check is there any purpose in having foam sidewalls and bottom in a latex mattress? Or is it just a cost saving measure ?
This site is just fantastic

Hi scamo,

Foam sidewalls are added to a mattress to create a firmer edge for people who like to sit on the side of their mattress and to reduce the tendency of the edge of a mattress to compress more easily than the rest of the surface and extend the sleeping surface. While this can be a benefit for a while … the foam will break down faster than the latex and what started off as a benefit can become a disadvantage so it’s really not desirable for a latex mattress. It certainly lowers the cost of the mattress materials as well (polyfoam is a much less costly material than good latex). Overall … I would avoid this unless the sidewalls were made of firmer latex.

A firm foam layer on the bottom of a latex mattress can help with production time and cost because latex is very flexible and can tear fairly easily when it is stretched and pulled as it is being made. It can also act as a way to raise the height of a mattress at a lower cost without affecting the feel of the mattress (you won’t feel the lowest layers if there is enough latex over it). It can also act as a stabilizing or protective layer for the mattress. A very firm thinner (an inch or two) layer of stiffer polyfoam on the bottom can also provide some stability to the mattress in some cases if there are thicker layers of softer more flexible latex in the mattress and a firm polyfoam bottom layer can also protect a mattress that is on a foundation where the slats are a little too far apart to prevent the latex from sinking into the gaps (which means you can use a cheaper foundation).

So I wouldn’t necessarily treat an inch or two of good quality firm polyfoam on the bottom of the mattress as a disadvantage if the benefits and cost justified it and the mattress contained enough latex to provide the benefits you were looking for. It can help in some cases if the rest of the construction of the mattress would benefit from it.

Phoenix

Thanks Phoenix for your very helpful answer

Hi Phoenix

I have decided on the mattress manufactor to buy the lattex mattress from Sandman mattress factory . They are a family run company since 1948 with 3 outlets .The mattress I tried is a medium density 8 inch flippable latex gold mattress . It had a poly fabric covering . But they have just introduced a 100% organic cotton fabric or a 100% australian wool fabric . They had them on display but not on the latex mattress but on a normal mattress . So for an extra $150 I can upgrade to this cover . The mattress is $1500 with an extra $150 for the upgraded fabric . So I am trying to decide which would be the better fabric the wool or cotton for the latex mattress . With the wool it isnt a layer of wool ontop of the mattres, but the fabric itself is the wool
Any suggestions would be appreciated Phoenix
Thank you

Hi Scamo,

I was looking at the site and the mattress you are looking at (along with the others) and it seems to me to be very good value. These are the type of manufacturers that I like a lot (privately owned, in business for a long time, and making good quality and value mattresses). They look like a great find to me

The cover you are mentioning is also interesting and I would certainly consider the upgrade. Most covers have a wool quilting layer with cotton (or other fiber) fabric but it sounds like with yours the fabric itself is made of wool. This would be very temperature regulating and stretchy and it would be well worth it IMO.

Phoenix

Hi Phoenix thank you for all your help .
I have gone ahead and ordered the mattress on Tuesday. They have contacted me Wednesday and said it will be delivered on the Friday morning . I asked if I could have the 100% australian wool on one side and the 100% organic cotton on the other and they are doing this for the $150 upgrade . The mattress has a ventilation band around the edges .
It is Thursday morning here in Australia and I am now trying to work out what type of mattress protector to get before the bed arrives .

So far I am very happy . The delivery charge is $70 and they are 1 hour drive away . The bed shops here in town wanted $40 for delivery and $50 to take the old bed away . They are taking the bed away for free . They have been very good answering all my questions .
I dont want to undo all the good work and get a mattress protector that doesnt breath . I do have a 3 year old that comes into our bed in the middle of the night . She has yet to ever have an accident . But I would like a mattress protector that would cover for this but not make the mattress hot . I am not sure if this is possble is it Phoenix ?

Thanks for your help

Hi scamo,

Congratulations on your new mattress

It seems to me that you did very well and made a great choice … especially considering that you had to do much of the “research” into manufacturers on your own. Your experience and feedback will hopefully be helpful for others who are in the land “down under”.

In terms of protectors … you have several choices which have different tradeoffs involved.

The thinner protectors that have a membrane that is waterproof and “semi-breathable” would make a good choice for many in your circumstances. They have the advantage of being thin and affecting the feel of the mattress less (as long as they aren’t to tight and create a “drum” effect on the mattress) as well as being waterproof in case of accidents. They are not as breathable as wool or cotton protectors though (they allow water vapor through but not a free flow of air) so for some people they can sleep warmer. I would choose one that used a natural cotton terry or a viscose fabric such as this bonded to the membrane rather than polyester.

A wool protector with a cotton cover such as the St Dormeir (I don’t think this particular brand is available in Australia) would also be a good choice. This one in Australia seems to be similar. It is water resistant (which for most is fine because any accidents won’t usually go right through before you have a chance to remove the bedding) but there would be greater risk of an accident staining the mattress if there are larger amounts of liquid or it’s left for a longer period of time. It has a little more effect on the feel of the mattress (even though it’s also stretchy … it’s also thicker) and it’s very temperature regulating and breathable.

A stretch knit cotton protector such as this (this one is not from Australia) is perhaps the most breathable of all and will also have little effect on the mattress but is only suitable for absorbing the typical moisture and body oils that come from sleeping and wouldn’t be as good as either of the other two in case of an accident so in your case I probably wouldn’t recommend it. A cotton protector such as this one that uses cotton batting rather than just a thick stretch cotton fabric will affect the mattress more even though it may be able to absorb more moisture.

So I would choose between the first or second type depending on the degree of “safety” you think you will need.

Your mattress manufacturer will probably carry several different types and may have more knowledge of good choices available in Australia because most of their customers would be facing the same choices for protectors that you are. they may even give you a discount because you are purchasing a mattress there.

Phoenix

Hi Phoenix

thank you for all your help
I had been given leaflets on the two protectabed mattress protectors you recommended from a shop selling latex mattresses but not the shop I got the mattress from in the end . They didnt carry the protectabed range . They did have mattress protectors but not those ones and I cant remember what they were .
Our local target store has the elite on sale for $99 this week in queen sized . When I zoomed up on the catalogue on the website the elite sayes on the packaging suitable for latex and memory foam . I feel better with the recommendation .
Thank you for the other recommendations that were cotton and wool . I will look into those as well .
On a websearch the dunlopillo cool comfort fitted mattress protector has come up a few times . I am wondering what this is like . It sayes it has a coolmax fabric
http://www.harveynorman.com.au/dunlopillo-coolmax-mattress-protector.html

I had been originally told that the mattress would take a week to make, but its arriving tomorrow morning .
I am leaning towards the elite mattress protector as I know I can actually have it here in time . I can go down to the shop now and get it .I wonder how much warmer it makes the bed sleep ?
Thank you for the alternatives if the bed sleeps too warm Phoenix Thank you for all your help

Hi scamo,

Coolmax is made from specially designed polyester fibers that are designed to wick moisture and spread it throughout the fabric so it will dry faster which controls humidity and temperature. It is commonly used on memory foam mattresses and other fabrics that need to control moisture and humidity (and temperature).

I don’t think it’s waterproof though.
