Hi Tim! Thanks for the offer. I actually got it today, unfortunately I don’t think I can tolerate it. I am very sensitive to smells, and am doing well with the Pure Echo, but the latex is too strong for me. Thanks for the offer though!

Sorry that the latex topper isn’t working out for you, but a word of caution regarding wool toppers. Don’t make the assumption that wool won’t have its own odor, and I can tell you from personal experience it can be far more of an objectionable scent than that of latex. Some wool has a strong barn like odor, so if you’re going to try a wool topper I’d be sure that you have a return option in case it bothers you.

  Definitely. Do you know of any other low-odor options? Cotton is the only other thing I can think of, and it seems like it is going to be quite firm. Thoughts?

Sorry but I don’t have any experience with similar toppers to recommend, my interaction with wool was when it was incorporated in a mattress.

So I ended up buying the Pure Echo. A few days of offgassing in the direct sunlight and the initial wool/cotton smell dissipated enough to be tolerable, so I am very thankful for that. It is indeed too firm. I now need to figure out if I am going to try a topper, and if I am going to try a new mattress. I am really happy I found one that doesn’t smell like chemicals but I also know its way too firm.

itsgoofy, while you’ve since added newer updates and seem to have changed your mind on the topper, I am responding to this particular post as it seems an educational opportunity for both you and several of your post responders. The term “off gassing” refers to fumes/volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are released into the air you breathe by certain types of synthetic foams . As the Pure Echo’s comfort layer is 100% GOTS cotton batting and no foam components are used, there is no “off-gassing” of chemical fumes as your use of the term implies. In the event a mattress you are considering has some type of synthetic foam component (in which case, off-gassing is potentially a concern), ensure that the manufacturer/ retailer has certified their foams for any off gassing or toxicity by a reputable testing organization such as Oeko-Tex, CertiPur or Eco-Institut.

For clarity, My Green Mattress uses natural materials backed by GOLS/ GOTS certifications. As an Expert trusted member of the TMU, I think highly of MGM in terms of quality, expertise and excellent customer support post-sale.

Side bar: exposing either latex foam components or pillows to direct sunlight for extended periods of time degrades the quality of the foam and is not recommended from a durability standpoint.

Latex will always have an odor. We had it for 13 yrs. Airing it in the sun will probably make it worse. I think I saw a latex manufacturer complain about people airing it in the sun and causing it to smell worse. I think some people get used to it and don’t smell it after a while. But if you are sensitive to odors like me it will always smell.

Natural rubber latex (NR) is a milky liquid which is gathered from rubber trees and is processed either by Dunlop method or by Talalay processing, with each result being a high quality foam in both terms of performance and durability. For interested consumers following these comments, you may learn more about the properties of Latex foam in Phoenix’s article “Latex: Pros and Cons”, as well as “Mattress Comfort Layers: Latex Foam”. Both blended and natural latex are very safe and while they may sometimes have a smell which ranges from “vanilla” to “rubbery”, this generally dissipates quickly and is not harmful. Regarding any long-term odor, none of our independent research supports as fact that “Latex will always have an odor,” a personal opinion of a responding poster and not one of proven science-based fact. A newly delivered mattress with latex components, pillows, etc. may have something of a “rubber” scent initially, requiring a day or two of airing for dissipation, and while there are those with a more sensitive sense of smell who may have a different experience, this statement overall isn’t an outcome for most consumers.

Went with a $400 wool coyuchi topper. Works great. Wouldn’t mind even softer, holy lamb organics and shephards dream have high end, thicker wool toppers that would probably be perfect.
