Looking for mattress guidance - best for pressure point relief

Hello, I’m a new member and have been reading the great info on this site. I’m hoping for some expert guidance in choosing a new mattress. I currently am sleeping on a 12 year old Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme king mattress. It’s had a good sized dip where I sleep for a while, but the past month or more I’ve been having a lot of really bad hip pain and some lower back pain and waking up during the night. My partner and I share the bed and our specs are below:

I’m male, 57 y.o. 5’10 205 - sleep mostly cool. Sleep on my back and sides probably 50/50
Partner is male, 61 y.o. 5’10 - 180 lbs - frankly can sleep on anything, no issues at all currently. Mostly side sleeper.

Overall for the twelve years we’ve found the Tempurpedic cloud comfortable, but I need a mattress that will be cushioned enough for my pressure points and alleviate my hip pain.

I’d prefer a bed in a box option or DIY rather than buying locally, and we’re in Madison, WI FWIW.

If anyone can point me in the right direction with a few recommendations, I’d appreciate it.

Thank you for this site!

If you like the memory foam of the Tempurpedic, maybe look at @BackScience

They use high quality foams and have unique methods of providing support for your hip/back issues. I like that their mattresses are customizable even after purchase. They can work with you up front to try to dial in your perfect fit, and then modify it after sale if it needs to be tweaked.

What Tempur-Pedic offered with their Cloud Supreme line was a bit lower density than what they had been using prior to that mattress, which usually does mean that it won’t last as long as former models in terms of providing the support that you need. However, they still had a 4lb. density on their top memory foam layer and you did get 12 years out of it, so the real decision is whether you want to stick with memory foam and if you do, what density quality you should you go with this time?

All of the bed-in-a-box memory foam mattresses I have seen are far too low quality to give you anything close to the level support, so I wouldn’t go that route. As a mattress designer, I tested all different densities and years before Tempur-Pedic developed their Cloud model I had already found that 4lb. and 5lb. densities were the best in terms of comfort and durability, with 5lb. certainly lasting the longest. If you want to go that route, you can take a look at the Tempflow EliteConforma medium mattress, since it uses all 5lb. memory foam and will give you a longer lasting support for your back.

With that said, @chalupabatman point, the Back Science mattress offers the best of both worlds, with the mattress being much more DYI like in that it comes with a unique GripLock modular cover system that allows completely free modifications for a full year, should you not like the feel, firmness or support. The more buoyant gel foam comfort layers and individually wrapped coils do give it feel that is a cross between traditional and memory foam in term of the feel.

If you do make a purchase from either website, be sure to use the code TMU10, so you can get the Mattress Underground preferred extra 10% discount and feel free to write back if you have any additional questions.

Thank you for the suggestions, I think the 5 lb density of memory foam is what I would want for pressure point relief. I’m not wedded to memory foam if there is anything else I should consider? Thank you!
@BackScience

I guess I am still trying to figure out how to not miss replies to this forum, but I am hoping we corresponded since this post, since I am not sure of your personal info. Just in case, the answer to your question is that while 5lb. density offers the best combination of durability and pressure relief, a Hypergel surface like what is used our Back Science beds works wonderfully to relief pressure, while giving a more buoyant support. This puts it at a good in between option for those that don’t want the pure memory foam more slow reacting contouring effect and maybe want a bit more overall support. If you do have any other questions still, feel free to respond to this post and hopefully, I will see it this time in my inbox! :slight_smile:

Thank you for following up. I haven’t purchased yet and am still researching so I appreciate the additional info. I’m definitely noticing more pain at various pressure points throughout the night, so I would say that’s my most important consideration at this point.

Thanks!
