Mattress Decision

I have narrowed my search down to the Ultimate Dreams Eurotop and the Sealy Comfort Latex Series (Burnham Creek). Which mattress provides better value and longevity? I am about 6 ft 220 lbs and my wife is about 5’ 6" 115 lbs. We both like comfortable mattresses that also provide good back support.

Hi kimdaddy,

A mattress is only as durable as the materials in the mattress … especially the comfort layers … so to be able to make any meaningful comparisons between them and to identify any weak links you need to know all the details of the layers that are in the Sealy Burnham Creek.

If you go here you will see the layering and as you can see out of the top 4.79" in the Sealy only .79" are latex and the rest is polyfoam. They don’t say the density of the polyfoam (and Sealy won’t tell you) but no matter what it is (and it would typically be fairly low quality/density) it wouldn’t be nearly as durable as latex. They also don’t tell you the density of the polyfoam that is used in the base layer but it’s also typically much lower quality foam (probably in the range of 1.5 lbs) than the 2.35 lb high quality polyfoam that is used in the Ultimate Dreams. The latex is also synthetic Dunlop which is also lower quality than the Talalay used in the Ultimate Dreams.

In other words … the Sealy has thick layers of exactly the type of foam that is likely to cause durability issues and which would be a significant “weak link” in this mattress. It also doesn’t have enough latex in the top 5" or so to really make much difference. It is much lower quality/value than the Ultimate Dreams in every layer and is exactly the type of mattress that you could expect to have issues with foam softening and the loss of comfort and support that goes with it (which isn’t covered by warranty) fairly quickly.

Thank you, I appreciate the help and will definitely go with the Ultimate Dreams. We definitely want a mattress that is going to last. We bought a boxspring from Simmons about 10 years ago that we liked that lasted about 9 years. We bought a similar one just over a year ago and it is lumpy to say the least. It seems like buying a mattress is hit or miss and I appreciate your help in making sure we don’t miss!

Hi kimdaddy35,

Congratulations on your new mattress :).

I would definitely call it a “hit” and it’s much better quality/value than the Sealy you were also considering.

I’m glad the forum could help you and I hope you have the chance to share your feedback when you’ve received it.
