Mattress dilemma

We are in the market again for our final master bedroom King size latex mattress. I am 5’3", 140 lb, stomach sleeper and very rare on my side. My husband is 5’8" 165 lbs, back sleeper and sometime on his side.
After doing all my research, we have narrowed down to 4 companies.

The Green Mattress : Local to me
Sleep on Latex : Local to me
Sleep Ez : Have 2 Roma mattress from here
Spindle : Have 1 full size mattress from here

I was wondering if anyone can help in understanding the factors that’s making SleepEZ 9" mattress $600 more then The Green Mattress Hope. I am aware Sleep Ez comes ahead by offering different configuration choices to customers but was wondering if there is any other factor that I am missing.
Following is the configuration I am thinking to go with which is exactly the same what Green Mattress has so I am comparing apple to apple

Sleep Ez Select 9" ( Bottom to Top)
3" Single GOLs Certified Dunlop Layer - FIRM
3" Single GOLs Certified Dunlop Layer - MEDIUM
2" Single GOLs Certified Dunlop Layer - SOFT
Cover: 100% Organic Cotton Knit Cover Quilted to 1" Eco-Wool

The Green Mattress Hope 9" ( Bottom to Top)
3" Dunlop natural latex - FIRM
3" Dunlop organic latex - MED-FIRM
2" Dunlop organic latex - SOFT
Cover: quilted cover with GOTS certified organic wool sewn in underneath.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

it sounds like you already followed your gut on the $600 price difference and did your best to compare the material apples to apples

Just look at the overall + and - to include warranty and other details of what your buying to make sure you have no surprises.

It helps that the mattress is local to test it out for a bit but 15 mins won’t tell you the complete story as it takes time to sleep on a mattress to really break it in to your sleep comfort journey. So don’t let the retail store person over convince you.

Stick to your gut and compare “Just the facts, ma’am.”

(As Sgt. Joe Friday, played by Jack Webb, in the TV show Dragnet (1951-59) Joe Friday didn’t get to be a sergeant by beating around the bush. He wanted to get right to the heart of the matter, hence his famous catchphrase when interrogating female suspects: “Just the facts, ma’am.”)

Hi Alamib,

Great job on the apples to apples comparison! I just had a look at the 2 mattresses you’re comparing, and I am seeing that the SleepEZ mattress is more expensive than the My Green Mattress, but I’m seeing a difference of $365 rather than $600. I’m going to include the prices and discounts I’m looking at just to make sure we’re seeing the same thing:

Sleep EZ 9" Select King:
base price $2299
minus $500 Cyber Monday sale
minus 5% TMU discount (looks to be stackable with other discounts)
Total: $1709

My Green Mattress Hope King:
base price $1519
minus $175 off winter sale
Total $1344

  • MGM Hope is $365 less expensive

Here are some differences I noted, along with the ones you noted::

  • SEZ mattress cover is zippered, allowing access to the latex layers
  • SEZ allows latex customization and splitting (including the option to use Talalay latex if desired)
  • SEZ uses Eco Wool in cover, MGM uses GOLS certified organic wool (IMO a minor difference, but you can Google “Eco wool vs GOLS organic wool” for more info on this)
  • SEZ includes 2 shredded latex pillows and a mattress protector in their “bundle”
  • The SEZ mattress will ship in its component parts in 3-4 boxes (you’ll put the latex into the cover yourself), where as the MGM hope mattress will ship pre-assembled in one box (I think, you should confirm).
  • The SEZ mattress ships in 48 hrs, where as the MGM ships in 4-7 weeks (but one place on their site says 3-6 weeks, so you may want to confirm),
  • Differences in returns/warranties, which you can read more about on their websites

The SEZ zippered mattress cover provides the flexibility to adjust the mattress without completely replacing it, which in my mind is a pretty great feature (but this may matter less to you).

Another factor to consider is the shipping. Both mattresses should end up weighing about the same (~150 lbs), but the SEZ will come in 3-4 boxes where as the MGM is one box. Some would consider mattress assembly to be a chore they don’t want to deal with, where as others would rather assemble themselves than move a single 150 lb box.

Another option: DIY

Another option is that you could build a mattress by ordering the component parts and assembling it yourself. For instance, buying the latex slabs from Sleep on Latex and ordering the organic cotton/wool cover from Sleep EZ:

  • SOL organic dunlop 3" firm topper $339
  • SOL organic dunlop 3" medium topper $279
  • SOL organic dunlop 2" soft topper $159
  • Sleep EZ organic cotton/wool zippered cover $470 (includes 5% off TMU discount)

Total cost $1247

So as you can see, the DIY route is a little less expensive than even the MGM Hope option while providing the flexibility of the SEZ Select option… There are definitely trade offs to building the mattress yourself, especially in terms of returns/warranties, so I’d recommend taking the time to understand those if DIY is of interest to you. I have recently done a DIY mattress build, so could speak more to some of those if you’ve got questions around that.

Disclaimer: To the best of my knowledge the prices and info I comparison info above is correct as of the time of this posting, but please do confirm pricing and “decision making factors” yourself to be safe.

Best of luck, and please update us on your progress!
Emily

Thank you. Agree completely that 15 mins in store will not give the complete picture.

Thank you for the detailed response. I think I miscalculated or didn’t take the discount into account.

MGM Hope is not an option now as we decided its not that high as we would like plus for some reason, we were also not satisfied with the sales associate’s response to our qs.

We have narrowed it down to SleepEz Select, just deciding on the height now. Should we go with 10" or 13" mattress. I do like they have the option where we can change the layers. Although knowing myself, I doubt I will be ever doing it
Hoping to make a decision soon!!

Thanks

Hi Sofia,

Thanks for the update! There are several forum posts discussing latex mattress thickness that you may find helpful: latex mattress thickness site:themattressunderground.com - Google Search

In short, it depends on a variety of factors including your weight(s) and the level of plushness want. But definitely check out the forum posts above for more detailed answers and other considerations.

Best,
