Mattress for 3 year old - Arizona, Brooklyn, Saatva, or SleepEZ Roma?

Hello DoctorJay,

Thank you for reaching out! Our Roma mattress is still on sale for $859 in a queen, and the sale has been extended at least through the end of this week. We also honor any sale price for up to three weeks after it ends.

The Roma is our most popular mattress for children. It’s made of two 3” layers of 100% Natural Dunlop latex—one medium and one firm—finished with 1.5” of quilting on each side, for a total height of 9”. The mattress is flippable, with one side offering a medium-plush feel and the other a firm-plush feel. It’s supportive, durable, and an excellent option for growing kids.

If you have any additional questions about the Roma or any of our other mattresses, please don’t hesitate to reach out any time!

When my kid turned 3 we went with a slightly firmer mattress, and it’s been great — supportive enough for them now and still comfy as they get bigger.

Hello,

I am new to the forum and also piggybacking here! I am looking for a mattress for my one year old and strongly considering latex build. I want it to stay around 6”. I am a small woman and will also be sharing the bed at times.

SOL suggested 4” firm with 2" medium on top. I’m afraid this might be too firm, and they said 3” of each could be a suitable compromise.

Sleep EZ recommended the 3" firm with 3” medium (both Dunlop) on top out the gate. I know SOL runs firmer than Sleep EZ.

What are your thoughts on the layer measurements?

What are the differences between these 2 companies’ mattresses assuming I order Dunlop from either?

Also, is there any merit to the claim that latex is unsafe for a young child due to unknown allergies?

Thank you!

@Sleep_EZ

The firmness of latex layers is not a fixed brand characteristic. Any company can source latex in a range of firmness levels, from very soft to very firm, depending on customer needs. What matters is the specifications a brand chooses to offer, not the label on the mattress. The best approach is to ask each manufacturer what firmness options are available and match those to your own comfort and support preferences.

Both builds could work, but the 3” firm + 3” medium is a more balanced choice for comfort and long-term adaptability, especially if you’ll be co-sleeping sometimes. And latex is generally considered very safe for children once it’s inside a mattress.

Mattress latex is vulcanized, washed, and usually wrapped in fabric, so the proteins that trigger allergies are not in contact with the sleeper. it is this process that generally separates the better quality latex manufacturers for the lower quality ones.

For extra peace of mind, most latex mattresses are encased in cotton and/or wool, so the child doesn’t touch the latex at all. Some companies will encase each layer of latex, or you can ask them to do this if your are very worried. Perhaps overkill, but it can be done. The type of encasement/cover can effect the firmness of the layers and/or mattress.

As always, remember to choose you foundation wisely. A subpar foundation can be the demise of any mattress, high quality or not.

Hope this helps,

Maverick.
