Mattress Pads

Now that I have a nice “wool” covered Bamboo Bliss, is it defeating the benefits of the mattress cover by adding a nice quilted mattress pad? I am looking at the “Dreamaway Comfort Fill Mattress Protector” at Amazon. Wondering if that negates the claim “Wool has also been proven to breathe more naturally than synthetic counterparts, increase REM, and help the body maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature.” of the higher quality mattress bamboo cover.

We do not suggest placing a mattress protector over a topper, it defeats the purpose. Your top comfort layer should be as bare as possible. We suggest using a material that stretches in all directions, in order to get the maximum effectiveness of your foam or latex topper. A mattress cover, or pad will only interfere with the natural molding and contouring of the foam, and will make your topper less comfortable because it will not be able to do its work properly.

you will find more information on the subject here

Hope this helps

cheers

Hi tcat007,

I think of everything in terms of tradeoffs rather than “defeating the benefits” of something. If the benefits of the mattress pad (some extra surface softness at a very low cost but using lower quality synthetic materials) are more important than the benefits of the wool quilted cover you have then it would be worth it.

The Dreamaway has a fairly thick layer of polyester fiber (the down alternative) which would add some surface softness to your mattress but it also would reduce the ability of the wool to regulate temperature and would probably sleep a little warmer. Some people would have no problem with this while others may notice it. Polyester fiber will also compress and become firmer as it packs down over time.

Are you looking to “fine tune” your mattress by adding some surface softness or pressure point relief to your mattress (which would be the most common reason to add a mattress pad instead of a mattress protector)?

You can also read a little more about different types of mattress pads in post #10 here.

Thanks! Going for the thinner Luna. Like the mattress as it is!

This thread comes at a good time for me. I’ve been lurking around this site since March of this year. I have literally spent hours reading the threads, their links and checking out other sites. Hell! It seems like I’m still doing it each time I venture over here  In some ways there may be too much info - or maybe it’s just my indecision

Anyway, some events forced me to put off the purchase of a new mattress until now (I’m looking to buy Dreamfoambedding’s Eurotop Ultimate Dreams King size mattress).

I was recently wondering whether a mattress pad would be necessary and if so which are recommended. That too led to a lot more reading than I imagined.

I am grateful for the existence of TMU.

Hi Taoman,

I certainly understand that there is a lot of information on the site that can sometimes lead to an overload of choices or information … but it’s probably better than not enough or worse yet the misleading information that so many people have to deal with in the mainstream industry.

Thanks for the kind words … and it seems that your reading is mostly done and you are close to making a very good choice.

This is still the early stages of the site and in a couple more years much of the information that is currently scattered throughout the forum in many threads will be part of a research center and will be a little easier to find (without me having to link to various forum posts and threads quite so often :))
