Well we finally determined that our latex foam mattress is not sagging anywhere, so it’s not likely to blame for my morning backaches.
I read that one’s sitting position could be the cause of back pain. Since I do spend quite a few hours a day sitting in my recliner, which seems comfortable, I did some research and learned that sitting with a small pillow at the back of the waist can help with back pain. So I tried it, and it has helped. I still have some back pain in the mornings, but it’s definitely better than it was when this all started.
My recliner is quite old and looking a bit shabby so as soon as I can safely go out shopping I’m going to have a look at new recliners, and see how they feel.
Does anyone know of a good brand?
You can find many inexpensive recliners but I find most of their build quality lacking. One furniture brand I’ve found to be of consistently excellent quality is Flexsteel which I recommend highly, not just for recliners but any seating they offer. As the saying goes… “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”

Hello Maggie, Just throwing something out there. I had an episode of severe back pain that was precipitated by a brand new and rather expensive mattress. I do have an underlying injury, but it’s been well managed for the last 20 years… until I woke up on my stomach in overly plush hybrid latex mattress (6 Inches of latex) and in severe, excruciating pain. Basically this cause my back to arch in my sleep and caused or exacerbated a listhesis. Even though I firmed up the latex, I continued to experience severe back pain in that mattress.
After a lot of comparison and analysis I’ve concluded that I needed zoned support under my hips. Uniform latex alone tends dip more under my hips and tends to tip my pelvis into a slightly arching position of my lower back. I find the same issue with pocketed coils with uniform stiffness. At least I think this was the source of my pain. Could this be an issue for you, as well? That said, I think that mattress might have had another contributing issue in it’s design, as well.
