Hi amymedia,
There are so many different options and methods of construction that trying to call a mattress “standard” is very difficult. It depends on each persons height/weight/body shape and sleeping positions and individual preferences (and there is a huge range in all of these) but the closest I could probably come in an “all latex” mattress (and there are many mattresses that use latex in combination with other materials to either reduce the cost or change the feel and performance) would be in the range of a 6" support layer of latex (with various levels of firmness depending on the support needs of the person) and then 2-3" of softer latex comfort layer on top (for pressure relief). These would typically be one sided (because latex is very durable) but are also available in two sided versions (where the comfort layer and the ticking/quilting is on both sides). This would probably be as close to standard as you could come.
I would suggest looking through the various latex manufacturers that are listed in the post I referred to and then talk with those that make a mattress of this type. There are a few of them and each has it’s own combination of features, ability to customize, and the ability to re-arrange or exchange layers (for those who need to make changes to or “fine tune” their mattress after a purchase). Once you have identified the ones that generally meet what you are looking for in terms of options and budget, then I would talk to the ones that interest you about which of their options would best suit your needs and preferences. If you have done any local testing on latex then this would also be helpful in their ability to give you the best possible advice and guidance.
Once you’ve talked with them … then comes the most difficult part which is making final decisions between choices that are all in their own way among the best value and quality in the industry. At least from this point you are choosing between “good and good” or even “great and great”
Plushbeds is one of the better online manufacturers and also have good knowledge and service and would make a better choice than many of the more mainstream outlets and mattresses but as you mention, they are not in the same “value range” as many of the manufacturers listed as members of the site which use the same or better quality materials but have better value. They are all very helpful and informative on the phone!
When you are purchasing a mattress from one of the manufacturing or retail members of the site (and most of the choices listed in post #21 I mentioned earlier make all latex mattresses, specialize in online sales and guidance, and are members here) … all you have to do is mention that you are a member of “The Mattress Underground” and they will give you the additional discount or bonus that they offer to forum members here (usually 5%).
So to recap … “typical” if there is such a thing in an all latex mattress would be in the range of an 8-9 inch mattress with either a wool/cotton quilting/ticking or a stretch knit ticking without the wool with either 100% natural Dunlop or blended Talalay latex support layers and comfort layers that were chosen to most likely meet your needs and preferences with the help and guidance of the manufacturers that make them.
Hope this helps.
