I am going crazy trying to find a mattress. Never spent so much time researching and I hate the mattress I have already bought 2300 for A mattress that gets so hot and can verily sleep on it. I am a side sleeper weight 90lbs .Use to the soft sinking feel of memory foam-- I will never again sleep on it --its way to hot Help thanks Kat
Hi Kathleen2,
I completely understand your frustration. Finding the right mattress can feel overwhelming, especially after investing so much and ending up uncomfortable. Based on what you’ve described, it sounds like you might prefer a mattress that you sleep on top of rather than sink into. This type of construction typically keeps sleepers cooler since there’s more airflow around the body. Most viscoelastic memory foams create that sinking into the mattress situation. This is not to say that all memory foam is bad, but for your situation, avoiding it or selecting a mattress that uses it in conjunction with thoughtful construction and design that expels heat with patented designs like what @BackScience offers in their mattresses.
Look for mattresses that feature natural materials like cotton and wool in their cover or quilted panels. These materials are breathable, moisture-wicking, and help regulate temperature far better than synthetic fabrics. Comfort layers that use microcoils instead of memory foam can also make a big difference, as they allow for increased airflow while still providing gentle contouring and support for side sleepers like you. Also, you likely wont need severe zoning in your mattress, particularly at your lighter weight. There are also mattresses like the @Glacier Apex that use ventilated foams to avoid sleepers sleeping hot in their mattresses.
If you like the plush feel that some mattresses offer, a latex hybrid with a cotton and wool cover panel can create this type of comfort. Keep in mind that if you are used to the deep sink-in feeling that traditional memory foam provides, it may be worth speaking with one of our latex experts. They can help you find a design that replicates that contouring feel, while still offering the gentle pushback and cooler sleep surface that latex naturally provides.
To stay even cooler, you might consider bedding made from 100 percent cotton or linen, for example an @BalooLiving linen sheet set. Wool toppers or duvet inserts can also help maintain heat neutrality, when combined with a linen sheet set, as wool naturally regulates temperature throughout the night. As a general rule, try to avoid bedding or mattress materials derived from plastics, as they tend to trap heat.
If you feel you need a more in person personalized experience, and you are in the Los Angeles area, @GoldenDreamsMattress in Carlsbad, and @BackScience in Agoura Hills are two reasonably close mattress showrooms offering a more concierge personalized service.
Hope this helps you get closer to finding that cool, comfortable, and supportive sleep surface you’re looking for.
All the best,
Maverick
@Maverick did a great job of highlighting the causes of higher heat retention in a mattress and I would add that it can be summarized as really only having two ways to prevent heat build-up in a mattress and that is getting as much conforming contouring of your body or not getting enough breathability. The first way will impact how comfortable the mattress is, so if you like the more contouring comfort of memory foam, then the Hypergel, combined with the patented Airflow Transfer System that Back Science employs with our hybrid series mattresses, would be a perfect match. The Airflow Transfer System offers thousands of small holes that allow air to flow through the surface layer and ventilate out the sides of the mattress, so you get an exchange of cooler room air, while allowing the warmer body heat to ventilate out the mattress. The hypergel layers of back science are also very comfortable and pressure relieving, while not allowing you to sink through the mattress, so it is better for overall support and specifically the spinal alignment of your back.

I totally get it, Kat — I went through the same thing! Some memory foam beds trap a lot of heat. You might want to look into latex or hybrid options with cooling layers. I switched to a hybrid and it’s been much cooler and still soft enough for side sleeping.
