Novosbed

Hey there!

I’ve recently found myself in the market for a replacement to a 5+ year-old Overstock.com (Biopedic) mattress. I’ve been lurking on the site, sifting through forums, and researching everything that I can toward the goal of the best night’s rest I can find! After hours and hours of digging, and researching (using Phoenix’s guides, etc.), I had landed on the Novosbed Harmony or Aria.

Side note; I’m a big guy, at 6’4" and just north of 300lbs, and currently live in the middle of AZ, so even with air conditioning, it’s usually pretty toasty around these parts. I’m doubting that the common theme of “too firm” for either Novosbed mattress would be an issue for myself. But, I suppose I’ll be tracking down a Serta iComfort Savant and Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme to get a better idea in person.

Anyhow, I have a few questions:

  1. I see a lot of historical mention of the Novosbed Sonata. Does anyone know why this product line was discontinued?

  2. Has Novosbed made mention of any upcoming Gel Collection offerings?

  3. I’ve seen a few, rare mentions of some customers finding sale prices on Novosbed mattresses; are there any consistently good times/options for finding such a sale?

Thank you!

Hi EonOfEmpyrean,

Welcome to the Mattress Forum! … and as you know you are certainly looking at a good quality/value option.

They would be the best source of information about all your questions (since anyone that replied would only be getting their information from them anyway).

The most likely reason that a company would discontinue a mattress is because it isn’t popular enough compared to their other mattresses but there could be other reasons as well.

I also don’t remember Novosbed having a sale (other than the free pillows which is an ongoing promotion).

I’m looking forward to finding out what you end up deciding.

NOTE ADDED JAN, 2016: They have now introduced their new simplified choice mattress which has replaced their previous models and have also become a member of this site.

Thanks, Phoenix -

I reached out to Novosbed, and received the following in reply:

"Thank you for contacting Novosbed!

You are correct, the Sonata model is no longer available and currently, we do not have any plans to start manufacturing them again. While there were many customers who liked that model, we have recently updated the airflow layers in all of our mattresses, which has reduced the amount of heat that they can trap against you, and planning to only have the three mattresses choices for simplicity (Classic = firmer, Aria = Medium, & Harmony = Softer).

I would also recommend choosing the mattress model based more on the level of firmness that you enjoy, rather than having gel memory foam or not. While currently it is being promoted by many mattress companies as a breakthrough in temperature control, we try to be a touch more realistic about its uses. Gel memory foam is a nice feature to have, however the main times you will notice a difference is when you first get into bed or if you move to another section of the mattress, as it is still a foam and will gradually warm up with body temperature.

If heat is a major concern, I would absolutely recommend being selective with the bedding used, making sure they are as breathable as possible (such as 100% cotton, loose weave sheets, and light, natural fiber duvets/blankets). As the less heat that is trapped against you by bedding, then the less heat any type of foam mattress can insulate.

Also we do have several TempurPedic comparable models that you can try to give you a better idea of how your models feel:

  • Harmony: a touch softer than the TempurPedic Cloud Supreme Breeze, and slightly firmer than the TempurPedic Cloud Luxe Breeze
  • Aria: slightly softer than the TempurPedic Cloud Supreme
  • Classic: slightly firmer than the TempurPedic Cloud Prima

Do keep in mind when testing comparable models, that they may have different designs and levels of firmness, but when trying in a store for only up to 30 minutes in a store they give a good indication of feel and firmness."

I was able to test the 4 models listed above, and got a feel for where, between them, the Novosbed options aligned. Hopefully this information is helpful to anyone else considering their beds!

Hi EonOfEmpyrean,

Thanks for sharing the information they provided to you.

Not surprisingly (since they are knowledgeable about mattress materials in general) … I would agree with their comments about gel materials (see post #2 here).

NOTE ADDED JAN, 2016: They have now introduced their new simplified choice mattress which has replaced their previous models.
NOTE ADDED AUG, 2018: They have now changed the mattress materials and specifications

I also agree with them that your sheets and bedding and the mattress protector you use can have just as significant effect on the sleeping temperature of a mattress as the materials in the mattress itself. There is more about the many variables that can affect sleeping temperature relative to different people in post #2 here.
