Overwhelmed in Kansas City

Hi, I have been reading this forum for months and I’m just as confused as when I started. I was burned on my last bed (innerspring), much sagging, pressure point problems etc. I do not want to purchase from a major store as I feel they are all inferior and too pricey. Thinking I would like a latex, but I’m only interested in spending around $1500. I’m familiar with the difference in Dunlop and Talalay, but once again not wanting to spend $3000 for a queen. I would consider a quality pocket coil and latex. I’m very confused on who to trust and where to turn. If you know of any places in or around the Kansas City area, I would appreciate. At this point, I would consider a purchase online if I knew where to turn. I have read the tutorial and open to suggestions. Thank you!

Hi boo,

It’s good to see that you’ve read the tutorial and if you follow all the steps one by one you will have the best chance of making the best possible purchase.

Two of the most important links in the tutorial that I would especially make sure you’ve read are post #2 here which has more about the different ways to choose a suitable mattress (either locally or online) that is the best “match” for you in terms of “comfort” and PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences) that can help you assess and minimize the risks of making a choice that doesn’t turn out as well as you hoped for and post #13 here which has more about the most important parts of the “value” of a mattress purchase which can help you make more meaningful quality/value comparisons between mattresses in terms of suitability (how well you will sleep), durability (how long you will sleep well), and the overall value of a mattress compared to your other finalists (based on all the parts of your personal value equation that are most important to you).

The better options or possibilities I’m aware of in and around the Kansas City area (subject to making sure that any mattress you are considering meets the quality/value guidelines I linked earlier in this reply) are listed in post #2 here.

If you are also considering online options then the tutorial includes a link to a list of the members here that sell mattresses online (in the optional online step) and many of them also sell latex and latex hybrid mattresses that use different types and blends of latex that have a wide range of different designs, options, features, return and exchange policies, and prices that that would be well worth considering (some of which are certainly inside your budget range).

In its simplest form … choosing the “best possible” mattress for any particular person really comes down to first finding a few knowledgeable and transparent retailers and/or manufacturers that sell the types of mattresses that you are most interested in (either locally or online) and that can provide you with all the information you need to know to make an informed choice and make meaningful comparisons between mattresses and then …

  1. Careful testing (hopefully using the testing guidelines in the tutorial) to make sure that a mattress is a good match for you in terms of “comfort”, firmness, and PPP … and/or that you are comfortable with the options you have available to return, exchange, or “fine tune” the mattress and any costs involved if you can’t test a mattress in person or aren’t confident that your mattress is a suitable choice.

  2. Checking to make sure that there are no lower quality materials or weak links in the mattress that could compromise the durability and useful life of the mattress.

  3. Comparing your finalists for “value” based on #1 and #2 and all the other parts of your personal value equation that are most important to you.

Thank you, that was a good read on the KC stores. I have called Hawn Bedding, but since they only offer Dunlop and not a combination with Talalay, I did not visit them. I had read about Orman’s, but the no return policy turned me off and they are always running “3 day going out of business, sales”…and have been for over 5 years. That is a turn off as well! I will visit the store that has the Savvy Rest and at least see if that will be feasible, if so, try to build one, then look online as I know they are out of my price range! You have given me other options and I appreciate it immensely as this is overwhelming and do not want to get burned again at the Mattress Firm that the other guy was mentioning. They were rude and the 2 mattresses we purchased 7 years ago, were junk! Thank you again!!

Hi boo,

I’m looking forward to finding out what you end up deciding … and of course any other comments or questions you may have along the way that I can help with.
