Portland Mattress Makers - Acadia Line

My husband and I are shopping for a mattress. He has had previous back surgery (needs supportive mattress), and I have fibromyalgia (needs some comfort layering). Someone recommended that we go to Portland Mattress Makers and check out their Acadia Plush King Mattress (traditional 660 innerspring), polyurethane foam quilted covering. Can you please tell me if this sounds like a good option for us? We’d like a flippable mattress, but I guess I’m a bit concerned that since this doesn’t have the individual pocket coils, the motion transfer might be annoying when one moves. Any thoughts or helpful suggestions?

Hi Cassie16,

There is more about the most important parts of the “value” of a mattress purchase in post #13 here that can help you make more meaningful comparisons between different mattresses.

I don’t know the specifics of the materials and components in the Acadia but if you can find out the information listed here and post it on the forum then I’d certainly be happy to comment about the quality of the materials inside it or help you identify any potential weak links in the mattress but Portland Mattress Makers certainly makes some good quality mattresses and a two sided mattress will also be more durable than an equivalent one sided mattress that otherwise uses the same materials (see post #3 here).

The best way to know whether the motion isolation of a mattress is “good enough” for you or whether a mattress is a good match for you in terms of PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences) would be based on your own careful testing (using the testing guidelines in the tutorial post) with both of you on the mattress so you can use your actual “real life” experience to decide.

Phoenix

Hi Phoenix, thanks for your speedy reply. I forgot to ask you about this mattress from Daly Bros (MaidenMaine) in Biddeford, Maine. I haven’t called a salesman yet, or gone in to visit the showroom as it is a distance away, but here are the specifics of the mattress I plan to check into when I do go there. Any thoughts?

Ultra Supreme

The UltraSupreme mattress is constructed to give a softer surface and firm support internally. The UltraSupreme uses a pillowtop construction on both sides to give you twice the useable mattress surface as compared to “No Flip” designs. We use 1 1/2 of high density convoluted foam and a double layer of polyester fiber in the top pillow layer to give a softer feel to the mattress compared to the Ultra. Inner tufting holds the internal components in place, then the pillowtop layers are added to the mattress. This is a true pillowtop construction, not the faux pillowtop constructions used by many national manufactures.

Hi Cassie16,

The information you listed doesn’t include all the thickness and layering details of the mattress (see this article) but the polyfoam is a high quality/density material and there doesn’t appear to be any obvious weak links in the mattress (although I would want to know the thickness of the polyester fiber and polyfoam quilting layer).
