REVIEW: Dreamfoam 13" Gel Memory Foam

I would like to thank Phoenix and the rest of the forum members for their information sharing on this site.

My journey started a few months ago when my wife and I decided that our 8 year old pillowtop (from one of the big “S” companies) had cratered to the point where we needed it replaced. I saw some decent mattresses online at Costco, as they generally have great stuff, and purchased the “Chapman” king size bed. It arrived a couple weeks later and we were on our way, or so we thought. A couple weeks in, the mattress already starts to crater where we sleep. I am 5’9" - 170lbs and my wife is 5’3" - and lets just say much lighter than me  We are both predominately side sleepers with some back sleeping.

Ok, so we decide to cut our losses and return the mattress. You have to love Costco, one call, one minute later, all done. Someone will call us and arrange for pickup. So the journey continues. My in-laws have the Bob-O-Pedic memory foam mattress and love it, so we decide to give that a whirl. We go to the store and lie on it and decide on the firm version which has 4" of 5 lb (unknown origin, re: China) over 6" of a decent support foam. It arrives the next week and it is very firm, much more so than the store one. I call them up and they state you must sleep on it for 1 month before you can do anything. After a month we decide “the rack” is just too firm for us and in the meantime I find this site and realize we can do better. By the way, Bobs Discount Furniture also has a great return policy.

After much research on this site and some in store Tempurpedic testing, we decide we like the Cloud Luxe. I narrow it down to the Dreamfoam 13" gel and SelectFoam Cirrus luxe. Admittedly, the SelectFoam is probably a closer aproximation of the Tempurpedic, but it’s also 3x the price of the Dreamfoam. Part of that expense is a no fee return policy. So I take a gamble and order the Dreamfoam in Full size for our spare bedroom to test out. Since it is a full, my wife and I take turns sleeping on it. We both like it, though due to size and location, it is not the perfect test, but close enough.

A couple weeks later, the king arrives, with the 2 latex pillows, one from the initial order, which I had not informed Dreamfoam that I was a member here, but Chuck was nice enough to put both in the next order. So after a long journey, and I apologize for this lengthy message, but to quote my wife, “I love this bed”, “I do not want to get out in the morning”. I would say I like it a lot, maybe a tad too soft, but nothing to squiblle over. As they say, keep the wife happy, the world is good… as far as temperature goes it is much better than the Bob-O-Pedic, which was very hot. The Bob-O-Pedic mattress also had a smell from off-gasing which my wife did not like. Oddly, I do smell the off-gassing from the Dreamfoam , but my wife does not, strange. It is not offensive, but I do notice. We do use a down comforter, which does keep it warmer. Support is great and it is comfy. For this price, and if I can get 5 years out of it, I will be happy.

I hope this helps others who are in a similar situation. In the end, I got 2 beds for less than the price of one SelectFoam. I am sure they also make a great product, with much better selection, with free shipping both ways, but if you’re in the market for a Tempur Cloud Luxe equivalant, the Dreamfoam 13" gel mattress should be on your short list.

Good Luck in your search.

Hi SleepTight,

Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed and helpful review. I appreciate it a great deal when the forum members here not only talk about their choices and how they worked out but the thinking and context behind them as well.

I also have to agree on the importance of keeping the “other half” happy
