Select Foam Cirrus Luxe ongoing review

Ok everyone, so here we go. My king Cirrus Luxe ES-13 showed up today, within the time specified on the phone at the time of my order. So far, the multiple communications with Peter at Select Foam have been great, and all responses have been almost immediate. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about their customer service thus far. My experience has been stellar. I received a tracking # yesterday, and it arrived today. I guess that’s the benefit of being only 4 hours away from them. Peter contacted me this evening to make sure my delivery went well and that I was satisfied with the product that arrived. So like I said above, let this be an official notice to everyone who is looking at Select Foam that my experience with them does not in any way correspond with the naysayers I’ve read online. In terms of how this bed looks in real life compared to how it’s advertised - this is exactly what Select Foam represents on their website. No games, no bait-and-switch, exactly what they advertise.

The first thing I’ll tell you is that this thing is very heavy. About 150lbs. This really is a two person job unloading this thing from the box and setting it up, but I managed to do it. I felt like I was trying to lift an object that fought me the entire way, flexing itself in the most inconvenient directions. For a guy that works out 3x a week intensely, this walked my dog. The box was thick and it is well packed, vacuum sealed with an exterior zip tied plastic bag of pretty good mil thickness.

Upon opening the mattress, it expanded to it’s full size in about 30 seconds. Its size is a perfect 76"x80". There was no need to wait for the mattress to expand to it’s full 13" thickness. It did it immediately. The two most noticeable things about this mattress were (1) there was absolutely, positively no smell involved in the un-packaging process. I have owned a memory foam mattress prior to this and it took about 3 days to rid itself of the foam smell. This one is not that way - I put my nose right to the cover and can’t smell anything. (2) the cover on this mattress is very, very nice. It feels identical in every sense to Tempur Pedic’s Cloud Luxe cover. In fact, I’ll say the cover even feels a little softer than Tempur Pedic’s Cloud Luxe cover. The swirl patterns are identical. The quality of the construction of this mattress is top notch, with a beautiful silk piping around the cover at the attachment to the suede sides. Did I mention this mattress was heavy? It took me a good 15 minutes of wrestling the mattress to get the bed skirt to line up and be centered.

I preface everything I’m about to say with this: I’m forming absolutely no judgments of this mattress until I sleep on it for a couple of weeks. Then my final decision and impressions will set in. That being said: the initial firmness is a bit more than I expected, and I’m not getting that classic “hand imprint” feel, but it’s similar. It’s a little more “springy” than I thought it would be, however, after walking all over the mattress this afternoon, I could feel the “sink” as I stepped into it. Got her dressed up and ready for a test run tonight.

I’ll post more over the next few days, weeks and months on this thread as I learn more about the bed and the results I had with it.

Hi Justso,

Thanks for taking the time to share such detailed feedback about your experiences with Select Foam and your initial impressions of your mattress … and for the pictures as well. I appreciate it and I know they will be helpful for others that read it

I’m looking forward to any ongoing updates you have the chance to share as well.

Phoenix

So I figured it was time to post an update, after two nights of sleeping on this mattress.

Night #1: My body definitely was adjusting to a much softer mattress, and in a good way. I did not toss and turn as I expected I would, as has been customary in changing beds. As I stated in my original post, I was surprised that the top felt a little firmer than I expected. As I laid on the bed for the first 10 minutes, I was stunned at how much pressure relief there is on this mattress. It felt like my heaviest points (hips, shoulders) were cradled perfectly. The mattress is so soft, yet the resistance pushing against you is so equally as supportive that you almost feel like you’re levitating on this mattress. It’s an odd feeling, but a very good one. After about 10 minutes and my body had heated up the mattress, then I got a slight sinking effect, but not as much as I recall feeling with the Tempur Cloud Luxe. But keep in mind, I laid on the one that was a floor model and had been broken in. I do anticipate the top will “open up” a little and get more melted clay-like as time moves on sleeping on it. However, I keep telling myself this is to be expected as I break the bed in. For those of you who are concerned about memory foam being warm, this bed is NOT warm, doesn’t sleep warm, doesn’t feel warm. All in all, the first night’s sleep was excellent. I woke up and my lower back felt just a slight tinge of pain, but this too is to be expected because I’m getting support where I definitely haven’t been getting it up to this point.

Night #2: Still amazed at how soft the bed is and how well it supports me. Almost as amazed as I am at how cool it sleeps. Coming from a previous memory foam bed that was non-gel infused, there’s a noticeable difference at how cool this mattress sleeps. I went to bed this time and didn’t wake up once. In my usual fashion, I went to sleep on my side and woke up on my stomach. This time no lower back pain. I felt fantastic when I woke up. Interestingly, I didn’t seem to get the “sinking feeling” as much tonight as the night previous, but again, I’m suspending verdict on that for at least 30 days. I’m really pleased with the sleeping experience and it takes no time at all for me to fall asleep. I think night #2, I was probably asleep in 10 minutes. This is a noticeable increase from my previous mattress. Every pressure point I put on this mattress I feel it gently “hold” me in the position. Notice I don’t say “i feel a firm support”. I still feel like I’m floating on the mattress. Granted, I know this is all subjective and very un-scientific, but its the best way I know to describe it. There’s nothing “firm” about this bed, yet it is completely supportive in the way it cradles my body. If the top opens up and becomes more clay-like, this thing will be a dream come true, and I have a feeling it will. So far, I’m very, very impressed with this mattress.

Hi Justo,

Thanks once again for providing some amazingly detailed and descriptive updates of your experience

Phoenix

So here’s the end of week 1 review.

This mattress keeps getting better and better. At first, I was concerned about the firmness out of the box, but considering my previous experience with memory foam, I knew that was normal and not to judge anything based on that. Sure enough, this mattress continues to get softer and more “cloud-like” (ok, I know, dripping with advertising propaganda :stuck_out_tongue: ) each night. At this point, both yesterday and this morning, I awoke in the same position I went to sleep in. I think what astonishes me most is how supportive this mattress is for being so soft. Side sleeping, which I do 80% of the time, is incredibly comfortable with no pain or discomfort in the hips or around the clavicles in the morning like with my old bed.

Another notable point is the edge support of the mattress. I can easily sit on the edge and not feel like I’m going to go right to the foundation. However, like the Tempur Pedic, I will sink into it a bit on the edge, but not enough to be unstable. Sleeping on the bed, I’ve slept close to the edge a couple of nights and there’s no “fall off” on the edge, meaning, I do not feel like I’m going to roll off the bed. Not at all.

In terms of heat and how it sleeps: Just like in my previous post, I still do not get hot at all in this bed. I have a comforter on top of a top sheet and even with that pulled over me, there’s no sweating, and no “I-have-to-move-off-this-warm-spot” feeling. These guys have nailed the cool part of the bed, to where I’d be willing to wager even the most picky of sleepers worried about heat wouldn’t find this bed warm. Am I projecting? Maybe a bit, because you can’t please everyone all the time, however, coming from a memory foam bed that did sleep a bit warm (even to me), this bed sleeps very cool and comfortable.

As with any review, I’m trying to find negative points or notes for improvement on this mattress. Funny enough, the only thing I can think of that kind of surprises me is why they do not put a company logo on the mattress. For a mattress of this quality, you’d think they’d be proud of their product enough to put “Select Foam Cirrus Luxe” on the foot of the mattress around the base layer, but they don’t. Really surprises me.

I’ll post back with another review shortly

Justso,

Please forgive me if you’ve already stated this somewhere and I’ve missed it, but I wondered what kind of memory foam mattress you had prior to this one? Just curious what you’re coming from to this one?

I very much appreciate your updates and look forward to reading more as you go!
Thanks

Thanks for the detailed review and pics justso. I just got my cirrus luxe last Friday and have really enjoyed the first few nights. I am waiting for the top layers to soften up a bit more but am already sleeping MUCH better than my old box spring with pillow top. I sleep all night on my back now (I used to sleep on my stomach mostly) and I don’t wake up throughout the night to get more comfortable position. It may be all in my head, but I feel like I am even dreaming more now.

I purchased the foundation from select foam and was honestly a little disappointed. They charged $400 so I thought I was getting a pretty substantial piece. The foundation came a few days prior to the mattress so I had time to set it up ahead of time. The construction seems a tad low end with very lightweight wood and while assembly was fairly straight forward I could not get the sides lined up perfectly no matter how I oriented the pieces or which pieces I combined. The head rails and side rails are at slightly different heights. This however does not seem to affect the performance. When covered with the included case it actually looks pretty good. The foundation seems solid enough and doesn’t make any noise so I guess it works but I am not sure I would call it a value. A handy DIYer could probably build the same thing for well under $100.

At the end of the day, I am still really pleased with the purchase. Combined with my z by malouf dough low plush pillow I am in sleeping heaven now.

I am considering Selectfoam as well. I’m curious what swung you to the Plush line over the Select HD line?

Sleepless,

I had an old one that was supposedly 5.3lb foam in the comfort layer from a now defunct (and very highly complained against) place called The Memory Foam Outlet which was based in Miami. It was a king size bed, but when I unwrapped it, it was really feather light. The bed may have weighed 40 pounds, so that tells me that the bed itself was in no way possible made up of the materials in which they claimed.

Doozie,

Glad you like yours! I’m still digging mine. It’s an amazing night’s rest, and be patient, the top will soften up. I’ve been on mine approx 3 weeks now and it’s continuing to soften. I already had a tempur pedic low profile foundation from my old bed and didn’t need to purchase one from Select Foam, so I have no experience with the foundations SF is selling.

gcrain,

I had laid on the Tempur Pedic Cloud Luxe and wanted either that bed or something identical to it. I’m a side sleeper, and also a prior memory foam sleeper, so I wanted to stay in the memory foam medium. I really wanted something I’d sink into and had plenty of cradling support. I like a soft bed, and when I found out that SF had reverse engineered their beds to match Tempur Pedic’s Cloud Luxe, it was what I wanted. The Select HD line was billed to be a little more firm than the Plush line, and I didn’t want that, as my last bed was too firm for my liking.

I have been testing the Tempurpedic models as well. Unfortunately it appears they don’t like to overshare regarding the material used. So far I am aware of Tempur, Tempur Feel, Tempur Climate, Tempur Breeze, Tempur ES, Tempur HD. Select Foam appears to share more information on the Tempurpedic beds than Tempurpedic does, although I’m not sure if it is completely accurate. I will definitely have to make another trip since I was not aware there were 2 different Contour and 2 different Rhapsody beds.

I’m now thoroughly confused yet again.

Hi gcrain,

Unfortunately … Tempurpedic is providing less and less information about the quality of the materials they use in their mattress and more and more “marketing stories” that replaces the quality information.

At the same time … they also appear to be “down-specing” some of their mattresses and replacing some of the higher quality materials they used to use with lower density versions.

They are also using some very low density memory foam (2.5 - 3 lbs) in their Simplicity lineup as well even though they are charging what other manufacturers change for mattresses that use much higher quality materials and more costly designs.

I wouldn’t get too involved in trying to “decipher” the materials in the Tempurpedic because for the most part it will just be a waste of time and turn into a dead end for most of their newer models.

Hi,
I am wondering if you considered Brooklyn Bedding’s Cool Luxe or Pure Cool Luxe and if so, why you decided on Select Foam’s Cirrus Luxe?

Thank you,
Ruthie

Ruthie,

I’m so sorry for how long it has taken to reply, I’ve been very tied up lately.

Why did I choose Select Foam over Brooklyn? Well, I wanted something that was exactly like the Tempur Pedic Cloud Luxe, and I researched this ad nauseum online before purchasing. I liked the fact that Select Foam basically ripped apart the Cloud Luxe and reverse engineered it, with better materials. After talking with Peter at SF and having him explain every detail of the bed and how they arrived at the design, I felt even more comfortable with the purchase. Having talked with the folks at BB, who were very helpful, I got the idea that the BB Cool Luxe was “very close” to the Cloud Luxe. I don’t put much stock in online reviews, but the one thing I did note was the continual review that “it feels a tad firmer than the Cloud Luxe.” I wasn’t wanting a “tad firmer,” I was wanting exactly the Cloud Luxe feel.
Based upon Peter making me feel 110% comfortable with the product, Phoenix’s feedback on their products and Cviz’s raving, I figured it was worth spending the money. Not to mention SF’s awesome return policy.

It was a toss up when I ordered between the Cool Luxe and the Cirrus Luxe, so I understand if you’re on the fence (assuming you haven’t ordered by now). What I can say is this…

11/2/13 Update:

I’ve been sleeping on this bed now for a few months and at the 30 day mark, the top had totally “opened up” and I can assure you this thing is as soft and in my estimation, nicer than the Cloud Luxe. I went back to the store and laid on the Tempur Pedic Cloud Luxe, which the floor salesman told me had been on the floor for about 8 months, so I was comparing the feel of mine with a mattress that had ample time to have people lay on it. I really think Select Foam has created a better product, as the plush feel of my top feels a tad more reactive than the Tempur model. Granted, that may be because I’m used to sleeping on my mattress now, but it truly replicates the feel of the Cloud Luxe “to a T.” As advertised, the gel-infused foam does not sleep hot at all. When I lay down to go to bed, there’s that initial “poof” feeling of the foam compressing, then as I lay there for five minutes or so, I can feel my body sinking into it little by little. Many nights I wake up in the same position I fell asleep in - that’s almost becoming a matter routine.

I have zero regrets about this purchase. Recently I had to travel, and I really missed my mattress. I couldn’t wait to come home and crash on it. I have a set of Malouf egyptian cotton sheets on it and it is a sleeping dream.

Put whatever stock you want in my review - I realize that we’re not supposed to buy a mattress based upon someone else’s experience. I hope that my purchase experience and material review of the product may help answer anyone’s questions. I’ll keep reviewing as time goes on.

If its not too much trouble, could you take a pic of the federal tag on the mattress and post it up here?
