Slat size for a bed being built

I am having a bed built for the 13" , 4 layer latex mattress I am ordering.
I know that the preferred space in between slats is aprox. 2.5 inches but what is the suggested width of each slat.
Queen size

Thank you

I suggest (12) 1x6 slats or better across side and center support rails/beams running over (6) legs/columns. Since the center rail arguably carries twice the load of a side rail, I like the idea of using (2) center rails spaced apart… they can then each be structurally similar to a side rail, and dimensionally smaller than if using just one; and the spacing between them shortens the 1x6 slat span on each side to make the slats stronger… assuming this suits the platform/base design. Also, a double center rail Queen design could more easily lead to a 2-piece King design, making a King platform/base easier to build and move.

Hi sleeping,

Outside of Sleepings great suggestions (and you can see an example here of multiple center beams) … a good guideline is that the surface area of the slats is at least 50% or more of the total surface area. This means that I would tend to use spacing with 1x3 slats (which are actually 3/4" x 2.5") in the range of 2.5" or less. Of course 1x6 slats would be stronger yet.

Closer spacing in the middle third of the mattress which carries more of the weight can also increase the support strength of the bed.

The type of wood used for the slats and its bending strength and stiffness can also make a difference.
