Sleep EZ 10000 Review - Install and 1 Week

I ordered a Sleep EZ 10" NATURAL LATEX MATTRESS approximately 2 weeks ago after much deliberation (as can be seen this thread PLB Good deal or not?) I decided on the sleep ez 10" natural in a S/M/F split configuration w/ blended talalay in a queen and ordered the 8" platform with it. It arrived within several days and i put the bed together within 24 hours of its arrival.

This mattress is easily the most comfortable bed i have ever slept on. I used to think i was only a stomach sleeper, but with the support and comfort layers of this bed i can sleep on my side all through the night. I sleep straight through the night and do not wake up tossing and turning trying to find a comfortable position. When i lay on my back watching TV or just relaxing the bed gives amazing support in the lumbar region. You sink in just enough to be comfortable but still are supported in a way that makes you feel like you are floating. I would rate my satisfaction so far as 10/10. As of now i am happy with the current configuration, even sleeping on my stomach occasionally the S/M/F is still firm enough that my hips do not sink forward and leave my with any sort of discomfort in my back. Granted i am relatively light at 160lbs but stll i am impressed at how the mattress is so comfortable yet so supportive. I am definitely going to be a latex mattress owner for life. Not to sound like an infomercial but i wake up feeling rested, with more energy, and no aches or stiffness.

Sleep EZ was great to deal with, Shawn answered many questions of mine. With the labor day sale i was able to get the bed for about 1840 shipped with the platform and pillows. To think i was going to spend more than that on a mattress alone with worse customer service and no return policy is incredible. This forum has really enlightened me and i can say without a doubt that if i had not stumbled upon this forum and been given the suggestions i was given, i would not be even remotely as satisfied with my purchase. I am satisfied in terms of the quality of the product as well as the transaction and value itself. A Comfortable bed is comfortable regardless of how much you pay, but knowing you got a great value is a very nice feeling. Thanks a lot Phoenix!

I had some questions in the previous thread about mattress protectors. I ended up buying this one at bed bath and beyond (since i needed a protector that night)clean rest Mattress protector . It sleeps cool and so far i’m content with it. It is water resistant not water proof. I was cross shopping it with the protect-a-bed luxury with the eucalyptus fabric. I read in some places that the protect-a-bed sleeps cool, but then several reviews on amazon said it sleeps hot. I still am considering swapping to the protect-a-bed so if anyone can shed some light on this i would appreciate it.

While putting the bed together i figured i’d take some pictures of the construction along the way just for fun. Here they are below:

Hi Jeffblue,

Thanks for the update and for sharing such detailed feedback and comments … and for the pictures as well

It’s great to see things are working out so well for you!

What you purchased was a mattress encasement rather than a mattress protector but if your goal was to have an encasement that protects you from allergies and bedbugs then this would be a good choice. The pore size is 1 micron which means that it will block even very small allergens and it also has a bed bug proof zipper and has been tested to prevent bed bugs from escaping so it would be a good choice for both of these. Because it’s a polyester microfiber that is very tightly woven, it is also water resistant (although I wouldn’t treat it as waterproof because liquids may still penetrate it with larger spills or over longer periods of time). It would probably be a little less water resistant than the membrane type encasements but would also be more breathable. If you are looking for allergy and bed bug protection, it isn’t having a negative effect on your comfort or sleeping temperature, and if the degree of water resistance is suitable for your needs or preferences, then it certainly seems like a good choice to me.

oh wow really? i didn’t realize that. If i’m looking for a protector without the need for any sort of mattress pad (i want to feel the latex and not have a bunch of unnecessary padding) should i just go for the Protect-a-bed luxury and return this one?

Speaking of which, can you settle something for me? when i told my mother i got a new bed she insisted that a mattress protector alone isn’t enough to protect the mattress from sweat and body oils or anything and you need a mattress pad no matter what in order to absorb sweat over night. what’s the deal? if you have a good mattress protector, do you not need any sort of pad for absorbing any kind of sweat or anything? after browsing the forum that is the conclusion i came to, but some confirmation on that would be helpful.

So basically the mattress encasement i got isn’t protecting my bed from any sort of sweat or moisture at all and i need something like the protect-a-bed luxury for that?

Thanks

Hi Jeffblue,

There is more about the pros and cons of different types of mattress protectors and links to many good choices for each of them in post #89 here. If you wanted a little more water resistance than you currently have and are OK with having a little less airflow through the top surface (which can affect temperature regulation a little more than the one you have) then a mattress protector like the Protect-a-bed or any of the other membrane types or protectors (some of which are less costly) would work well. It really depends on which of the tradeoffs for each type are most important to you.

A mattress protector is designed to protect a mattress from the body oils and moisture and skin cells that we release each night and to protect against spills and accidents as well. It also protects the mattress warranty because even a small stain can void a warranty. They are easily removed for cleaning and are an important part of keeping your sleeping surface in a clean and hygienic condition. They are designed to have the least possible effect on the “feel” of your mattress. The different types all have different tradeoffs between the degree of water resistance that they have, the amount of airflow they allow and their effect on sleeping temperature, and on the effect they have on the “feel” of your mattress.

Mattress pads on the other hand are thicker than mattress protectors and generally have some additional padding that is designed to change the feel of your mattress by adding some additional surface softness but can also reduce the ability of softer foam layers below them to compress and contour to the shape of the body. Some of them are also water resistant or waterproof so they can double up as both a mattress pad and as a protector but they certainly aren’t “necessary” to protect the mattress.

Your mattress encasement also serves as a mattress protector (but also protects against allergens and bed bugs) and is water resistant (but not waterproof) so it would offer better protection against body oils and fluids or spills and accidents than some types of mattress protectors that are only moisture absorbent but are more breathable and would have less protection than others (such as the membrane type) that are more water resistant or are “waterproof” but would be less breathable.

Thanks for the insight Phoenix, much appreciated. so basically if i go to one of the membrane type for protection like the protect-a-bed luxury it will be at the expense of breathability and probably sleep hotter than what i have now?

Hi Jeffblue,

Yes … these would be the basic tradeoffs involved. Some people would notice the difference in temperature and some wouldn’t depending on where they are in the “oven to iceberg” range and the type of sheets and bedding you use will play a role as well. There is more about all the variables that can affect sleeping temperature in post #2 here.
