SleepEZ and Urban Green (FSF)

We originally liked the Savvy Rest split king (soft Talalay, medium Talalay, and firm Dunlop for me, and medium talalay, medium talalay, and firm dunlop for husband). Also considering an Omi with the same configuration in the same approximate price range. Then from research here, we’ve discovered SleepEz and Urban Green costing about a third less. That’s enough for us to consider ordering online.

In talking with SleepEz, they suggest using the same configuration we liked at SR. Yet I’ve read some customers thought their firm was firmer than SR, and SR doesn’t give out their IDLs. We haven’t spoken with UG yet. That’s tomorrow. Is this the point where you rely on the experts from each company to help you pick the right configuration from their sources? If both get their talaly from Latex International, would it have the same properties in their mattresses?

Also, we’ve never tried out a mattress with 4 3"layers. Based on our height and weight (5’8" and 160 and 190 pounds), We were told we didn’t need the 4th layer for PPP, that it would be just to make the bed higher. We will have an adjustable base, so I imagine another 3 inches would make the massage function less effective, but that’s not a priority for us. Is 3 layers of 3" usually enough or is there a reason to consider the 4th layer?

I cannot begin to thank you enough for making these resources available so we don’t make another mattress purchase mistake!

Hi golfergirl29,

Yes … this is the time to “rely on the experts”

When you can’t test a mattress in person then the most reliable source of guidance is always a more detailed phone conversation with a knowledgeable and experienced retailer or manufacturer that has your best interests at heart (which would certainly include both manufacturers you mentioned) and who can help “talk you through” the specifics of their mattresses and the properties and “feel” of the materials they are using (fast or slow response, resilience, firmness etc) and the options they have available that may be the best “match” for you based on the information you provide them, any local testing you have done or mattresses you have slept on and liked or other mattresses you are considering that they are familiar with, and the “averages” of other customers that are similar to you. They will know more about “matching” their specific mattress designs and firmness levels to different body types, sleeping positions, and preferences (or to other mattresses that they are familiar with including Savvy Rest) than anyone else.

Urban Mattress offers a choice of either certified organic Dunlop or 100% natural Talalay in each of their layers. Their Talalay latex comes from Latex International (now called Talalay Global).

SleepEZ offers a choice of either 100% natural Dunlop (not certified organic) and either blended Talalay or 100% natural Talalay in eachof their layers depending on the model. They source their Talalay from both Radium and Talalay Global.

If the blend, thickness, and ILD of two layers are the same and they are both from the same manufacturer then the two layers would have the same properties (outside of small variations in firmness because the ILD of latex can vary up or down slightly from its nominal rating). If they come from different manufacturers and they are both the same blend, thickness, and ILD there may be some slightly larger differences between them in terms of ILD and to a small degree the “feel” or each layer but most people wouldn’t notice a significant difference.

Of course the differences between Talalay and Dunlop in the same thickness and ILD would be larger and there is more about some of the general differences between them in post #7 here. Most people will also “feel” more of the differences between layers that are closer to the sleeping surface than the differences between layers that are deeper in the mattress.

While you certainly aren’t in a weight range that would “need” more than three 3" layers or about 8" - 9" of latex or so … there may be some people that can feel the difference and may prefer it. There is more about the effect of thickness in post #14 here.

Thanks for the kind comments … and it’s great to hear that the site has been helpful.
