Sofa Sleeper modification with Latex?

I wanted to join others in expressing my gratitude to this forum and the the mattress underground team for all the great information here. We will be visiting Spindle Mattress in Massachusetts in the next several weeks to explore their all latex mattresses. We were lost before finding this website!

We are moving to our new home next month and it will be necessary to make one room multifunctional as a guest room/family room and are planning on purchasing a sofa sleeper to have a place for overnight guests. I was wondering if any members have knowledge of sofa sleepers with mattresses of the quality that are discussed on this forum? Alternatively, would it would be practical to purchase a 3 inch latex topper to keep stored in a cover and then when we have overnight guests, affix it atop the likely crummy mattress we’ll find in any sofa sleepers on the market? I’ll also ask Neal this question when I visit Spindle but I thought someone here might have experience in DIYing a sofa sleeper.

We’re not really considering a futon as a more traditional sofa will serve our overall needs for this room 95% of the time. We expect to use a sofa as a sleeper perhaps a few nights a month for guests and perhaps nightly for 5-10 consecutive nights once or twice a year for visiting family or friends. Some of these guests are couples so a queen sleeper would be our preference.

I hope this question isn’t too off topic and thanks again for such a wonderful resource and community.

Hi JW3,

You really have a choice of two directions here. One would be replacing the sofabed mattress itself with a higher quality mattress and the other would be adding a topper. Both would isolate the feel of the metal springs and bars in the sofabed and be more comfortable than the typical sofabed mattress which is usually made of fairly low quality polyfoam (although they do vary in the grade and “feel” of the polyfoam they use).

If you decide to replace the mattress then a few of the better sources I’m aware of that make or sell sofabed, truck mattresses, or rv mattresses include …

If you have somewhere to store it when it’s not in use and decide to go in the direction of a topper then post #4 here includes some of the better topper sources I’m aware of.

Even a 2" topper can make a considerable difference in the comfort of a sofabed.
