Soft, Medium, Hard Mattresses

We are comparing a couple of different Mattresses at Parklane Mattresses of Tualatin Oregon. Specifically looking at the Pettygrove and the Quimby in a Cal King Mattress. We have been doing some research and can’t quite figure out how these two are rated and in which category. We like both and one is a little firmer than the other but trying to still figure it out.

Hi Lawsm,

I would keep in mind that there are no “standard” definitions or consensus of opinions for firmness ratings and different manufacturers can rate their mattresses very differently than others so a mattress that one manufacturer rates as being a specific firmness could be rated very differently by another manufacturer. Different people can also have very different perceptions of firmness and softness compared to others as well and a mattress that is firm for one can feel like “medium” for someone else or even “soft” for someone else (or vice versa) depending on their body type, sleeping style, physiology, their frame of reference based on what they are used to, and their individual sensitivity and perceptions. Different people can also have very different opinions on how two mattresses compare in terms of firmness as well. This is all relative and very subjective and is as much an art as a science. There are also different types of firmness and softness that different people may be sensitive to that can affect how they “rate” a mattress as well (see post #15 here).

The best way to know how soft or firm a mattress feels to you (regardless of how it feels for anyone else) or whether a mattress is a good “match” for you in terms of PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences) is based on your own careful testing and personal experience (hopefully using the testing guidelines in the tutorial post).

As you probably know from your reading here I think highly of Parklane and they are one of the members of this site which means I believe that they compete well with the best in the industry in terms of their quality, value, service, and transparency.

The Pettygrove is a pocket coil mattress with a layer of latex (and probably some other comfort materials as well) and the Quimby is an offset coil mattress that has a combination of latex and memory foam and polyfoam in the comfort layers so outside of any difference in firmness because of the differences in their materials, components, and design, they will also have a different subjective “feel” as well but you are the only one that can feel what you feel on a mattress or decide which of the two is the best “match” for you in terms of PPP and all the other parts of your personal value equation that are most important to you.
