Tried 5 mattresses trying to escape this back pain!

Hi All! – I’m feeling a bit exhausted and overwhelmed… I’m hoping you can help me! I’m in a desperate search for a mattress that will put a stop to the terrible back pains I’ve been having.

I’ve never had issues with my mattress until recently. For years I’ve been sleeping on the super cheap and cheerful Zinus Green Tea mattress, I bought it without a second thought, and found it super comfortable, and never looked back. Then years later we had an issue with mold in our house and had to throw out all soft furnishings that couldn’t be washed thoroughly. So we threw out the mattress and I did a bit of research and figured I’d order something higher quality and healthier, so I ordered a latex mattress. And that’s when the back pain started. Lower back muscle pain in the early hours that on some days impacts my legs/ankles/achilles. Some days I’m ok, some days I’m not. Things tend to resolve almost completely after moving around and getting things moving for a few hours in the morning. But it all seems to be getting worse as my muscles are subjected to repeated stress, I was in agony last night as my muscles up my leg spasmed for hours. Anyway…

—————————————————————

Here are the mattresses I’ve tried over the last 5 months or so:

  1. Zinus Green Tea (Orignal - no pain!)
  2. Sleep On Latex Medium
  3. Sleep On Latex Firm
  4. Leesa Sapira Hybrid
  5. Helix Twilight with Ergo Align Layer (current)

I started with medium latex but as that caused pain have slowly moved firmer without much avail. I tried my sofa bed in my office for a couple of nights and that *seemed* to help (it’s very very firm, not a proper mattress, and it seemed to give back relief alough did hurt my shoulder!). Hence the firmer is better theory. I seem to really sink into my current mattress even thought it’s supposed to be medium-firm.

Key Info

We have a king size bed.

I’m 41 years old, 6’1” and about 130lbs. I’m naturally a back and side sleeper but since the back pain started sleeping on my back has become impossible.

My wife is 5’7” and 130lbs. She is a back and side sleeper (has no back pain but prefers a firmer mattress in general).

—————————————————————

So my current inclination is to go back to a pure memory foam mattress or similar, as thats the last type of mattress that worked for me (the zinus). But I’d like something a bit higher quality than the zinus, and something more breathable to mitigate potential of mold etc. But generally, a firm memory foam I figure is the next move but the specifics are overwhelming (I’m scared of trying another hybrid or latex mattress to be honest given my recent failures with them, but maybe there’s more nuance to it so am open to expert suggestions!), I’ve spent hours and hours researching and every time I think I’ve found one, a little more research discovers a swath of terrible reviews for it.

All the mattresses I’ve bought so far have been about $1700, but am willing to go up to around $2k or just over if it gets the job done!

I would really appreciate any advice you have for me! – I can’t go on with this much pain and swapping my mattress every 8 weeks!

Thanks so much!

David

Hey Dmcg.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

I’m really glad you posted because you’re definitely not alone in going through something like this. What you’re describing is frustrating but also pretty common when switching from one type of mattress to a completely different one, especially when your body has been used to a certain surface for so long.

A few thoughts come to mind reading your post:

1. Your Zinus experience gives us valuable clues. ~ The fact that you were pain-free on the Green Tea mattress tells us a lot. Those beds use softer memory foam that allows more contouring and “in” rather than “on” pressure distribution…which could explain why your back and leg muscles felt relaxed. Latex, by contrast, is far more buoyant and “pushes back” more against the body. For some sleepers, especially lighter-weight individuals like you, that upward support can sometimes feel like resistance rather than relief.

2. Coil and latex hybrids might just not be your match. ~ Since you’re sinking too much into hybrids and latex builds, they may not be aligning with your weight and support needs. At 130 lbs, you may just not have enough body mass to deeply/adequately engage firmer latex layers, so instead of supportive contouring, you might be “hovering” awkwardly on top or bottoming out in certain zones. That’s a recipe for the kind of deep muscle pain and nerve irritation you’re describing.

3. Memory foam might indeed be the better path (but quality matters). ~ It’s completely reasonable to lean back toward memory foam based on what you know has worked. There are far more breathable, higher-quality memory foam options today than when you first bought your Zinus, including some with open-cell designs, gel infusions, or ventilation channels to improve airflow and reduce mold risk. You’ll still want a model with good density and support underneath - ideally 4 lb+ density memory foam over a high-density polyfoam core.

4. Coil height can affect feel but it’s not the whole story.~ You asked about coil height, and yes, it can influence how a mattress performs. Taller coils (like 8–9.5”) generally allow more travel and responsiveness, which can feel more supportive for your spine. Shorter coils (like 6”) can sometimes feel “flatter” and less adaptive. But construction, zoning, and comfort layering matter just as much so coil height alone probably isn’t the root cause here.

If you want to explore a memory foam option that’s still breathable and higher quality than your old Zinus, you might look at builds from smaller manufacturers who focus on durability and pressure relief, or even something like the DLX Premier Hybrid if you want a plusher, contouring feel without the drawbacks you’ve experienced in latex. Or something like the Brooklyn Bedding signature (or their other mattresses) may be worth a look as well.

And if you’re open to it, we could help narrow down a few models to try if you share your city or region, there may even be some showrooms near you where you can test them in person.

You’re not starting from scratch! You already know what hasn’t worked and what has. Now it’s just about using that knowledge to fine-tune the next choice.

Hi! I would love to provide some insight for you. I understand how challenging it can be to find a mattress that works well. We carry over 30 brands at our store (https://ultrabed.com/) and there are a couple mattress brands that I think could work great with your situation. Back Science is a hybrid style developed by Dr. Rick Swartzburg designed to keep you in perfect alignment whether you sleep on your back, side or stomach. (https://backscience.com/)

· Zoned Lumbar Support: The Back Science features our patent pending Lumbar-Flex Zoned Support, which is designed to prevent your hips from sinking too much and keep your spine in proper alignment. This will help with your lower back pain, especially when you’re on your side.

· Pressure-Relieving Buoyancy: The mattress has a layer of buoyant hypergel foams that provide pressure relief for your shoulders and hips, allowing them to sink in just enough to relieve pressure without causing your entire body to sink too far.

· Hybrid Construction: The combination of over 1000 individually wrapped steel coils and our foam layers provides the support you need without the “rock hard” feel of other firm mattresses.

· Customization: We offer a GripLock modular cover system that allows you to easily customize the firmness and support of the mattress. So, if you find it’s not quite right for you, we can send you additional layers to change out.

· Long-Lasting Comfort: We’re confident in the durability of our mattresses, and our 30-year warranty offers double the sag protection of most warranties, covering dips of only 3/4 of an inch compared to the industry standard of 1.5 inches.

We also produce the Tempflow mattresses. These are memory foam mattresses. Memory foam tends to feel a bit more sinky than something like the buoyant Hypergel that Back Science uses. (https://tempflow.com/)

· Superior Pressure Relief: Tempflow mattresses are designed to provide deep contouring and pressure relief, which is crucial for side sleepers and for alleviating hip and shoulder pain.

· Patented Cooling Technology: We use a patented Airflow Transfer System that promotes airflow and breathability, which can be a significant benefit over traditional memory foam.

· Exceptional Longevity: We stand by the quality of our mattresses with an industry-leading 40-year limited warranty, which is four times longer than Tempur-Pedic’s warranty.

· Customization: We can also optionally offer you our GripLock modular cover system that allows you to easily customize the firmness and support of the mattress. So, if you feel a mattress is not quite right, we can send you layers to adjust it at no cost. We can also give you the ability to go softer and even add our patent-pending Lumbar-Flex back support zoning if you need that extra support.

If you would like to speak with a member of our staff so we can discuss what would be the best for you, please feel free to give us a call at 800-667-1969. Since you are a Mattress Underground user you can save an additional 10% off with code TMU10.
