Ultimate hybrid pocket coil mattress from mattress.net

Can anyone give a review of this mattress? I did a search for it in the forums here but don’t see much info on it.

My wife is in love with the stearns and foster firm pillowtop so I figure a hybrid might be the closest I can get to that feel.

We are also considering an all latex but just wanted to hear opinions on the ultimate hybrid.

Thanks we are in northern NJ and are going to visit urban natural to try out their berkley ergonomics beds as well.

Thanks

Hi Ildeez,

An “exact term” search “ultimate hybrid” (you can just click the link) will bring up all the forum posts and feedback that mention it.

You’ve probably seen this but just in case you haven’t … the better options and possibilities I’m aware of in the Northern NJ area are (subject to the “value” guidelines here) are listed in post #7 here.

Hi ldeez,

I ordered one last week and will get it next week. Ken bent over backwards to help me pick out the right combination for me. I brought my favorite pillow and was there about 2 hours, went back after deciding on the hybrid to fine tune my choice. Was there again for about an hour and tried just about every combination possible.

They even do 1/2 1/2 latex firmness for couples. The main reason I picked the hybrid was because I live in Phoenix and I read that it sleeps much cooler.

I have cannibalized my old (25 years) mattress for the horsehair mats, so I ordered the softest possible latex thinking of using them to help cool things down in the summer. I hope by then the latex is broken in. I’m not quite sure how to layer the wool and horsehair to get it right.

Once I sleep on it for a week or two, I’ll let you know.

Thanks for the review hope you enjoy it!

So you went with the plush latex layer?

Hi Cynthia.M,

You certainly made a great quality/value choice … and congratulations on your new mattress

Your mattress would certainly be “broken in” by the summer and a wool quilted cover is a good temperature regulator (in both directions) so you may decide not to add the horsehair at all. If you do decide to add the horsehair mats I would use the results of your own personal experience to decide how to use it. Your choices would be to add it inside the cover over the latex or outside the cover as a separate topper and each one would affect the feel and performance of your mattress in different ways but if you use it as a topper in particular you may need to cover it and possibly tuft it as well to keep it from shifting.

I got my mattress and love love love it. I was super lucky because I had a duvet cover that fit the horse hair / wool mats like a glove
so I use it as a topper, and it is incredible. I’m still getting used to sleeping like a queen. I should have bought it sooner, it has perfect give/support regardless if I’m sleeping on my back or side. I don’t share my sleeping space, so can’t comment on those issues.

Hi Cynthia.M,

Thanks for the update and feedback … I appreciate it.

It’s great to hear that everything worked out so well for you

Hi Cynthia,
where did you get the horse hair mattress? What size is it and the thickness?
In 1980 I slept on a horse hair mattress and it was the bestest sleep ever! I don’t know where the people got it.

Hi Maxie,

I don’t know where Cynthia bought her mattress but just for reference there are a few manufacturers that are still using horsehair in their mattresses. Some of them include …

Hastens also makes a horsehair topper here.

Phoenix

Hi Phoenix,
thank you for the websites.
I’m hoping you know the answer to my puzzle.
In the early part of 1980, I was a guest in Springfield, Missouri. The mattress I slept on was the mostest comfy ever! It was firm and cuddled to my body and had the support and not stiff. At that time, the owner said it was an old horse hair mattress.
Truly, I have not slept on any mattress since the one in Springfield, Missouri and I am desperate to locate one just like it. I’ve been sleeping on a Aero air bed for three months, Time to get the REAL DEAL.
Could it have been handmade?
Where would it have come from at that era and location?
I have not slept on any mattress since the one in Missouri and I would like to locate one just like it.

Hoping you have the piece to this puzzle.
Thank you Phoenix!

I wish I could help but there really isn’t any way for me to know who made it or anything about the mattress itself (it almost certainly would have contained more than just horsehair). Some of the links I listed still make “old fashioned” two sided innerspring mattresses with horsehair and “real” box springs but I don’t know if that’s the type of mattress you slept on.
