Will laying down a wool blanket between me and my mattress make a hot mattress cooler? Would a wool topper be better?

Hi JBR2020

Yes, any breathable material – wool, cotton, coconut coir and bamboo are all popular options – will allow increased airflow between the sleeper and the mattress itself. Depending on what materials your mattress is made of for example, memory foam, by its nature, allows a person to sink in and adapts to their body shape/sleeping position) a mattress can allow a sleepers perspiration to ‘pool’ close to the surface of their skin, which in turn is warmed by the sleepers body heat, causing some consumers to sleep ‘hotter’ than preferred…Phoenix gas a detailed post on mattress ‘micro-climates’ in this post

As for your proposed solution, a wool blanket will work in a pinch, but a topper of cotton or wool would be a more long term fix as they won’t bunch up or move during your sleep. Many retailers offer these at a variety of prices, including many of our Trusted members of the site.

Here’s hoping you have many comfortable and cooler nights of sleep going forward!
