10" mattress + 3" topper vs 13" mattress?

Savvy Rest maxes out at a 10" / 3 layer mattress. What they call their “13 inch unity pillow top” is actually a 10" mattress plus a 3 inch topper.

As I’ve looked at the competitors, it seems many of them offer a 13" , 4 layer option.

Any advantage to one approach or the other? I don’t think my preferences would change to where I ever only want three layers.

We do plan on putting it on an adjustable bed. And we do plan on a 3" wool topper (so a total of five layers). I do wonder if mattress plus two toppers will slide around while being adjusted. Wondering if that’s a good or bad thing.

Having a top layer that is not encased with the rest of the mattress will allow that top layer enough spatial freedom to move upwards when you lay on it, making for a very plush and enveloping feel. Since it seems like you’re looking for a VERY soft mattress, I think a mattress with a 3" topper is going to be the best choice. I don’t normally recommend the topper with a cotton & wool cover unless you already know you like the specific feel of that. Anything you have between yourself and the latex affects how much you’re able to sink into the latex, making for a firmer feel and give the mattress more surface tension. So the inch of wool in the topper cover will make the mattress firmer and negate some of the function and purpose of the topper.

Interesting… Trying to remember the sequence of things… But I think, in the sales room, for each mattress config we tried, the wool layer was always added before the latex topper was. Wool was always on top, but I don’t think we ever tried just the latex topper. Are you suggesting that would have felt softer without the wool topper?
