3 inch Latex (super-dense) mattress topper on a wood foundation = Mattress?

Hi Forum Members

Seeking (really) firm mattress options for ~$1000 (king-size).

Looked up a local ‘Taiwan mattress’ store which is recommending primarily two options:

  1. Multi-layer mattress with (individually cloth-wrapped) coils, memory foam-ish layer, with a pillow-top
  2. A 3-inch super-dense mattress topper fitted on top of a wood foundation, with a cloth cover

Am not sure option 2 above qualifies as a mattress. Seems too hard/inadequate. Any information/inputs on this will be very helpful.

Thanks,
Anant

How “firm” a mattress feels is of course quite subjective, so you’d definitely want to sample these products in person if you had an interest in them.

It’s difficult to determine “how firm is firm” strictly by a general description of a mattress as you’ve provided here. Overall, the information you need to know when assessing the componentry within a mattress is listed in this article. As for the “firmness”, that is dictated by the support unit for alignment and stopping you from “bottoming out”, and then your surface comfort firmness that is mostly dictated by the amount, type, thickness and hardness of the comfort materials placed on top of the support unit of the mattress. It seems that this mattress uses a pocketed coil support unit, a memory foam comfort layer, and then some unmentioned materials contained within a pillowtop panel. How hard or soft this mattresses feels will have to be determined through your own personal testing.

Again, there’s no meaningful information about what is contained within this product, so I can’t provide any commentary. I don’t know if you are actually in Taiwan, but in Asia “firmer” sleep systems are popular, and this sounds as if it may be something along the lines of a shikibuton, which generally is quite firm.

There would be no way to determine this from the limited descriptions as you provided, so I would suggest you visit your local retailer to obtain more complete information about these products and test them out in person. If you have any other questions once you do this or obtain specifications, feel free to post back here and I’ll be happy to comment upon them.
