5'4 Female 170 lbs. Side sleeper looking for recommendations. Help!

Hello Mattress Experts,

I’m a 5’4 woman, 170 lb side sleeper looking for a new mattress. I used to own a Beautyrest Plush Pillow top that I had only a couple of year. I found that extremely comfortable but can’t say past those couple of years how they held up. Recently I’ve been sleeping on a all foam mattress from a box that I hate. I wake up sore everyday and hate that it has no side support. I tend to like more plush mattress. Any recommendations?

I recently went to a mattress store and enjoyed trying out a Beautyrest Silver Plush however I’ve read here that the quality of those isn’t great.

Any recommendations would be awesome. Thank you!

Hey BrookeR,

Welcome to the TMU Forum  ! Thanks for your question.

Congrats on your new mattress shopping journey  ! Hope that you find the many articles and guidelines from Phoenix’s research to be helpful for answering your mattress research questions and we’ll do our best to help as well.

I’m sorry to hear that your current all foam mattress is causing you daily soreness, Brooke. What brand mattress are you using and what type foam is it made of? What size is it? As a slightly higher BMI side sleeper, your curvier body profile brings more “gaps” to fill in to spread your weight over the mattress meaning you will need a softer and thicker comfort layer for optimal pressure point relief. A proper firmness

support core
is important too for maintaining correct spinal alignment.

Good job on your site visits and mattress testing  ! While extra caution is needed during these concerning pandemic times, actually experiencing different mattress’s materials, constructions and “feel” are the one sure way to understand how you would interact with a mattress. Do keep in mind that floor models have logged in some use and will feel a bit different than a newly manufactured mattress.

From the Beautyrest Site, the Silver/ Plush details are:

Comfort Type: Plush

Mattress Height: 12"

Cooling: DualCool™ Technology

Comfort Layers: Plush Comfort Foam, Gel Memory Foam Lumbar Support, AirFeel® Foam

Support System: 900 Series Beautyrest® Pocketed Coil® Technology

So, their proprietary ingredients are listed without specific details on the materials themselves, important for evaluating amattress’s durability long-term. With your previous Beautyrest Plush Pillow top mattress, what qualities did you like, aside from its plush feel and firmer edge support? Do you prefer traditional innerspring construction or are you open to other mattress constructions? What size mattress are you planning to buy and what is your budget? Whatever you choose, make sure that you always find out the information listed here so you can compare the quality of the materials and components to the durability guidelines here and make sure there are no lower quality materials/ “weak links” that would be cause for concern before making a purchase.

Hopefully, some of these “thought starters” will provide more insights for your research, Brenda. Looking forward to learning more of what your next steps will be and good luck  .

Thanks,
Sensei

I am your exct same size (and 56 YO). I have slept comfortably on a 100% organic latex mattress from plushbed (12 in) - 3" firm, 3"medium, 3" soft and 2" extra soft with 1" cotton/wool cover. I also have fribromyalgia and this mattress has really helped with pain and stiffness. This mattress doesn’t sleep hot like a memory foam. I find memory foam miserably hot and cant sleep on it… Due to this brutally hot summer my husband and I have felt a little hotter at nights, so I’m waiting on a new 8" coil base because I live in a hot humid climate and want to try a hybrid mattress to see if it’s cooler since it’s more breathable. I plan to use the new coils and try different foam firmnesses to see which we prefer (if any). I was extremely happy with the quality of the Plushbed and their customer service. I started out with the 10" medium but it caused me terrible pain and stiffness. I called and they did a comfort exchange by adding a 2" topper (I did have to pay $400 for the taller cover but the foam was free). Once I recieved the topper it made the mattress really wonderful. I’ll come back and post next week when I’ve changed to the hybrid with coils and let you know how it worked. Plushbeds does offer a hybrid now that they didn’t when I purchased my mattress.

So I finally found my mattress build. The first comfortable build, that I thought would be the one was:

1" firm latex,
8" Quantum Edge Elite Coils
3" firm Talalay latex (old plushbed layer)
3" soft talalay latex (old plushbed layer)
1" organic cotton and wool cover (unzipped because it’s only A 12" cover)

This was comfortable and supportive, but due to my fibromyalgia I was wanting something that felt a little more plush. I tried putting the 3" medium over the coils instead of the firm. So new configuration was:

1" firm lates
8" Quantum Edge Elite Coils
3" medium talalay latex (old plushbed layer
3" soft talalay latex (old plushbed layer
1" organic cotton and wool (unzipped).

This configuration was exactly what I needed. No aches, pains or stiffness. It is also very supportive so no back pain, even my huband who is 5’10"/190 lbs finds it extremely supportive and soft. For the first time in years he has not been waking up with numb hands. Just a note, I put the 3" soft talalay under the cover because I do not like the feel of sleeping directly on the latex with only a sheet and mattress topper, I like a little bit of “sink” to my mattress… I did have to order a new 15" cover to accommodate all the height of the new mattress (15"). We also had to order a 5" foundation because the 9" foundation made our bed too high for our taste.

Finally, because I am an absolute luxury bed diva, I add a Cozy Earth bamboo mattress pad and some Cariloha classic sheets, to enhance coolness even more. We have not woke up hot or had to throw off the blankes since creating our new bed.

For us, this mattress is exactly what we were looking for, cool, supportive, plush and oh so comfortable. As you can see, we’re willing to spend more to get a good nights sleep. As I tell people, we spend $30K to $40K on a car we are in less than an hour per day, but balk at spending a couple of thousand on a mattress we are in 6-8 hours per night.

Hope this helps.

Just a quick update–my husband (5’10"/190 lbs) informed me this morning he “felt like he was sleeping in a ditch,” so I had to go back to the 3" firm as the transitional layer instead of the 3" medium. However, I received my new bamboo and wool cover from Arizona Premium Mattress and it made a huge difference in how plush the bed felt. It was an extremely cool and soft cover–I can’t wait to try in out tonight.
