I want a 6in pocket coil system for core support in a DIY mattress. I’m 175lb 5’10, side and stomach sleeper, but do appreciate a firmer mattress with a plush pillow topper. Which of the following would be best for my situation. Leaning more towards the Caliber Edge, just wondering if it might be too firm? Anyone have experience with any of these three coil systems?
Between the three, the Caliber Edge from Arizona Premium Mattress will definitely feel the firmest. Its 13.75-gauge coils and slightly lower coil count give it a sturdier, more “traditional” innerspring feel. For someone at 175 lbs, it might come across as a bit stiff if your comfort layers aren’t plush enough, especially for your shoulders in side sleeping.
The Dynamic Edge and Elite Edge both have higher coil counts and thinner-gauge wire, so they’ll offer more surface conformity and a little more give which is particularly noticeable when paired with latex or softer comfort foams. Of the two, the Elite Edge has a slightly more refined edge-to-edge design, which can help with overall consistency across the surface.
If you like the firm, stable base of the Caliber Edge but want to keep some flexibility, you could always pair it with a slightly thicker or softer transition layer above (like 2" of medium latex) before adding your plush pillow top.
I’m in a pretty similar situation (combo sleeper, like a bit of firmness with some plush on top), and I’d say just be careful not to go too firm with your coil choice. A firmer unit can feel great for support, but it can also push back too much for side sleeping if your comfort layers aren’t dialed in.
From what I’ve seen, higher coil count options tend to feel a bit more balanced and contouring, while lower count / thicker gauge coils lean firmer and more rigid. If you’re already planning a softer topper, that could help offset it though.
Curious what others say too—this is one of those layers that really sets the tone for the whole build.
