Okay. This is gonna take a lot of explaining…… I’ll try my best to be easy to understand. I am 5’5" 165 pounds and a female with bigger hips and butt, so my bottom tends to bottom out on a mattress easier than someone else might. I am a side sleeper.
I have been tweaking my DIY build for about a year now. The bottom base foam is the HD36-HQ from Foam By Mail in 6 inch 35ILD. I have tried many different layers…. I eventually figured out that I do not like 3 inch comfort layers. I tend to bottom out and sink. Just a comfort layer and the base layer hurt my hip, and was too firm. So I know I needed 2inch comfort layer + middle layer + base layer.
So moving on to what i have now. https://bestwayfoam.com/bedding/copper-infused-memory-foam-topper-8hh2h-byccs-3lkzh I have two of these, one in Soft and one in Firm. It’s their responsive foam, i forget the brand name of it but it’s basically a latex foam hybrid. Bouncy foam.
I have been sleeping on the (from top to bottom) Soft+Firm+ HD36-HQ for a week now, and the support is fantastic. It’s just slightly too firm to be comfortable on my side. I also love the slight bounce those two toppers give.
So to try and remedy the firmness, I bought a 2 inch Serene foam topper. Here’s where I run into issues. It’s now…. Too soft? And I have lost some of the support.
I tried taking out the Soft responsive topper, and adding the Serene foam like this: Serene foam + Firm responsive topper + base. But the serene foam and firm foam compressed under my weight and I could feel the base foam and it hurt my hip.
I am wondering if the base foam I have is too firm, since I had to add so many middle layers to take away the firmness of it. And since there’s two soft ish middle layers, adding a softer comfort layer makes it too soft.
Couldn’t I just buy a latex core in a slightly lower ILD to remedy this? And then I can take out one of the middle layers, and have a configuration like this : Serene foam + Firm responsive topper + Latex base. I would try springs as a base, but the last couple spring beds I had hurt my hip.
TLDR; the current setup I have is too firm, but adding a comfort layer on top makes it too soft and I lose out on support. I am looking to possibly switch out the HD36-HQ base I have for something softer, but I have no idea.
