A steel foundation - too wide spacing for a memory foam mattress?

I’m a bit on a budget right now and would like something sturdy. I’ve currently got a memory foam mattress I’m trying out (with a high density polyfoam base) and wonder if this foundation is not supportive enough:

(Sleep Master Smart Box Spring)

I like that it will be more breathable for a mattress but worry about the slat spacing.

I can’t determine the exact spacing between those metal slats, but by my calculations, looking at sample pictures, it’s anywhere from 6 to 7.2". I see from some reviews people use it with memory foam mattresses and say that it works fine for that (and the included fabric frame cover fits tightly), but then who knows if they are checking the mattress underside periodically to make sure it’s really alright.

Would it be barely okay for a 9" memory foam mattress with a dense polyfoam base? Or not really? And definitely not okay if we end up with a firm/medium/medium 9" talalay latex mattress later? Or is it fine to use in both cases?

Hi TidalWave,

It would certainly be strong enough but the gaps between the steel cross members look like they would be wider and the actual support surface would be less than I would be comfortable with.

It definitely wouldn’t be OK IMO for an all latex mattress with a latex support core that was resting on the foundation.

Thank you, Phoenix, I thought that might be the case.
What about this version:
Spa Sensations 7.5" High Bi-Fold Box Spring

(plus a fabric cover over the frame)

I do also have unused Queen sized wooden slats from IKEA that I never ended up using. I suppose I could put them on top of a foundation like this, but they’d probably slide around and not be optimal (plus the increased height).

Hi TidalWave,

That would be more suitable for your memory foam mattress IMO although I still wouldn’t use it with an all latex mattress without something else on top of it to even out the support (see post #10 here).

Thank you, I might try that foundation then. I like that it’s easy to transport if we end up moving. If we swap to a latex mattress, I will see about placing the IKEA slats I have in storage over that frame for greater support. I know the slats have fairly narrow spacing.
