Hi all,
I recently purchased a Charles P Rogers Estate SE mattress. After sleeping on it for a month, my wife and I have decided that we like a lot of things about it — but it’s somewhat too firm. We need more pressure relief for side sleeping. For reference, I’m 170 lbs, 5’8", and mostly sleep on my back and side. She’s 125 lbs, 5’7", and mostly sleeps on her side.
We can return or exchange the mattress for another ~70 days, but we’d rather not go through the hassle and would prefer to try adding a layer to soften it up. Here’s where I’m looking for advice.
The Estate SE has a coil unit as a base and a separate topper that is 2 inches of 24 ILD Talalay latex, so I would have the option of placing an additional layer either below or above the existing topper. I’d prefer to use latex, and I’m hoping to increase the overall depth of the mattress as little as possible — 1 or 2 inches. (It’s already 13 inches. Our sheets aren’t going to fit well past 15 inches. And we’d rather not have to buy new sheets.)
Does anyone have any suggestions for the firmness of the additional layer and the placement, either below or above the existing topper? Thanks so much for your time.
I’d suggest using an additional 2" of talalay 19-22ILD on top of what you have currently. Talalay is not available in 1" thickness so that’s not an option. Looking at the mattress construction I would get the layers with a cover because there’s really no space to put it under the 24ILD layer and precompressing the layer will not help you with pressure relief.
Thanks a lot for this advice. I didn’t realize that Talalay doesn’t come in 1 inch right now, and now I see there have been discussions on the topic.
After measuring today, I’m hoping to avoid adding more than an inch of overall height, and I’m also hoping to keep the existing Talalay as the top layer. If I were to try adding an inch of Dunlop below the Talalay, would I want to aim for about the same ILD, 24, so it doesn’t precompress? And is it possible that this would add any noticeable amount of pressure relief?
If you want to add softness to an adult mattress you definitely want to use talalay not dunlop. Additionally it’s very unlikely 1" would really have any sort of impact anyway (2-3" is usually a minimum layer thickness depending on what effect you want it to have). I’d say your options are either to keep the mattress as is, return it or to add a 2-3" comfort layer on top to see if that fixes your issue (even if it requires new sheets). You could also remove the original 24ILD comfort layer completely and create your own design but again with the height limitations and the fact this is a brand new mattress still under warranty I wouldn’t suggest it.
Thanks so much for this tremendously helpful advice. With this in mind, I think I’m heading toward either a return/exchange or just leaving it as is.
