After a lot of searching and reading, I decided to get a Loom & Leaf Relaxed Firm, memory foam based mattress. I am still in my trial period, but the bed is simply too firm, causing left shoulder pain. This is my first memory foam mattress and it feels noticeably firmer the the Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe that the company says it compares to. I should also say I am in my early 50’s, 190 lbs. with arthritis in one shoulder.
I tried a memory foam topper, but it was overly soft and I didn’t like the feel. I am now trying a 2" soft latex mattress pad and I find the bed comfortable. It now has the generally feel I want. I am torn, however, on either returning the mattress or to live with the L& L with the topper combination. Does it make sense having to add a topper to a new bed? Do you return an try and find the right comfort level? Thank you
Congratulations on your new mattress! :cheer: I’m sorry it’s a bit too firm for you. As you’re aware, it will tend to lose a bit of its “false firmness” as a bit more time goes on.
While some mattress companies will try to approximate the feel of another company’s products, any changes in foams, layers, thicknesses, covers and order combinations will result in an overall different feel. And unfortunately, your arthritic shoulder will be the most sensitive to this.
I usually don’t suggest buying a mattress and a topper off the bat, as this combines two different variables in creating a single comfort. However, this is not what you set out to do, and through actual personal testing you’ve found a combination that seems to work quite well for you. And in the end, your own careful and personal testing is the ultimate indicator of the appropriateness of any combination of materials for your specific needs (and you certainly have specific needs with your arthritic shoulder).
There would be no specific reason to return the product strictly because you’re using a topper (which many people do), unless you have a personal preference to have all of the layers of materials contained within a single encasement. And there would be no indication that purchasing another product using “similar” layers would be as comfortable as what you have right now. In the end, the decision is yours, but I personally would have no issues with keeping your current configuration, as it does seem to work well for you.
