I’ve just (like, 10 minutes ago) ordered an all-latex mattress from SleepEZ. Split king, so essentially 2 twinXL mattresses. My husband has sleep apnea and really wants to get an adjustable base. We’re going to head back to a store over the weekend and focus more on the base options than the mattresses, but I was wondering if anyone here has any recommendations?
My husband’s apnea is moderate-to-severe (probably leaning towards severe) and he needs to deal with that with his doctors - I’m working on shoving him into a sleep doctor’s office. But he does sleep with fewer interruptions to his breathing when he’s more upright. He’s been sleeping on the couch/recliner for months now, trying to minimize his breathing issues. An adjustable base makes a lot of sense for him. I’ll make use of something like the zero-gravity setting for relaxation and maybe sit upright on occasion to read, but this really will be a feature for him, primarily. We’re trying to make sure we’re getting him what he needs, without wasting money. (I’m actually pulling $ from my retirement account for this purchase. I hate to do it, but with neither of us sleeping well, it’s a must.)
He’s currently leaning towards the most expensive option for the adjustable frame, mostly because of the head-tilt feature, which he feels might help him adjust his breathing even better. (Not certain on that, but it’s his hope and expectation.) Basically, there’s another point of articulation near the top of the mattress that allows for a little more adjustability/head support. It looks to me like something I’d maybe use when sitting and reading or watching tv, but not helpful when sleeping. My husband thinks that extra articulation point could make a difference for him when sleeping, however. For a $2000 difference, I’d like to make sure that’s true.
The specific one that he tried in-store was a BedTech BT6500. It’s roughly $1000 more (per twinXL!) than the next step down, which had most of the same features, though the 6500 added a few bells and whistles that are nice-to-haves, but not must-haves. The biggest functional difference was that head tilt feature. Can anyone who’s got a top of the line adjustable bed share their experiences? Does the head tilt make a difference in your sleep?
Does anyone have any feedback on BedTech brand overall? Is there another adjustable frame company we should be looking into? I will find a place that has them near us, if at all possible, so we can try out another brand if advised.
Good job shoving him into the doctor’s office. I had to do the same with my brother. He’s using a mouth piece of some sort to help with his apnea (he didn’t want a CPAP) and like your spouse, sleeps better upright or propped.
What’s the mattress that’s going on this base? Do you already have one, or are you looking to buy a combo?
I ask, because often the best base is the one that the mattress manufacturer provides/recommends.
I just ordered our split king mattresses from SleepEZ following their responses to my previous thread here. They’re 10", all latex (Dunlop bottom/middle, Talalay on top), no springs or other foam. They assured me it’d be no problem to put them on an adjustable base.
My husband briefly tried CPAP more than a decade ago. Didn’t like it. Went with the mouth guard option, which honestly was never enough, but at least did something - until it broke several months ago. He’s since been sleeping semi-upright on the couch because he can’t make himself sleep on his side in bed and sleeping on his back leads to far too many apnea episodes. He needs to go back to the docs and deal with it appropriately (likely with CPAP), but adding the adjustable base can only help him in the short- and long-term.
I’m sure I’ll love having an adjustable bed too, but as a side and stomach sleeper, I wouldn’t do this splurge just for myself. For his health though? Whatever it takes…
Just looked at the Remedy III. Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to have the head tilt function my husband thinks will help with his breathing when he sleeps. It does look like a quality option though.
Right now, I’m leaning towards the Sven and Son Bliss adjustable base. If anyone knows of a reason not to get it, please give me a head’s up! The reviews for their mattresses seem pretty mixed, but I mostly saw positive feedback for the base, so I’ve got my fingers crossed that I’m making the right choice.
It has all the things my husband feels will help him most - namely, adjustable lumbar support and that head/pillow tilt feature. And it’s thankfully a nice chunk less than the honestly not-too-bad price we got from a local store for the BedTech that has all the same features. (BedTech’s own website is selling that 6500 model for far more than the store was asking.)
I’m leaning towards splurging on the white glove delivery option, because dragging those heavy machinery beasts up two flights of stairs in my home sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.
Any chance someone here has thoughts about/experience with Sven & Son adjustable beds? I’ll need to order soon, since my mattresses should be on their way sometime next week. Sleep EZ moves fast!
I just received my SleepEZ all latex mattress a few weeks ago. So far I’m happy with it. I have acid reflux so I decided to get an adjustable base to see if that helps. I sleep on my side and stomach, so an adjustable base that tilts the whole bed keeping the mattress flat was important to me. I ended up ordering the Ergo-Pedic iTilt. I haven’t received it yet, so this isn’t a recommendation (yet), just an option, but it doesn’t have the additional head tilt. It’s pricey, but if it helps reduce the acid reflux and get better sleep, then it will be well worth it. Good luck with your search!
The availability of the incline tilt on that model may be a game changer for you. Incline sleeping has many health benefits. Here is a post that speaks to some benefits.
Just be certain you have a great pillow to match the mattress, sleep position and loft based on how you sleep.
Interesting! I hadn’t considered a full body tilt base. I’ll go check out the Ergo-Pedic you mentioned. Thanks! I have reflux, and some nights it gets really bad. I hope the adjustable base helps you get some relief!
CPAP was a godsend for me 20 years ago. Whiny babies who don’t want to wrestle with a CPAP in their lives gotta get a grip. Frequent oxygen deprivation of his brain at night is a really bad idea. I know I was lucky, in that I was able to adjust to using a CPAP more easily than many other people. But whatever it takes, he’s got to beat the obstructive sleep apnea.
You’re right. I know it. My husband knows it, too. But inertia’s a mighty force, and ignoring it is easier than dealing with it. Therefore, I will be kicking him until he gets himself to a sleep doctor. Kudos to you for seeing a doctor and doing what needed to be done.
My message may have been a little harsh, but I am such a fan of CPAPs. I was sleep deprived for years, but resisted doing anything for exactly the same reason your husband resists. My story is bizarre: an error at my medical clinic put me in the wrong room waiting for the wrong doctor. He was the sleep specialist. Since it would be 10 minutes before the correct Dr was available, we talked. He convinced me to do a sleep study and I agreed. Old-fashioned technique, I think - I would sleep one night just being observed and monitored, then come back for a second night being treated (while I slept) by a remote-controlled CPAP. I had a bad attitude, felt that I’d sort of been arm-twisted. Until I awoke the second morning after the first good night’s sleep I’d had in 20 years. I felt like I could fly. Please tell your husband he DESERVES a better life.
