Adjustable Beds Size Requirements

Hi Phoenix,

Thanks again for all of your help with our mattress selection. I will update everyone with our decision and thoughts on the mattress to ‘give back’ to the site. We were considering the L&P S-Scape (I know not the base that provides the best value) and were told that our bed frame surround needs to be at least 86" from the inside of the footboard to the inside of the headboard. Our bed is 85 13/16" and was told it may not work due to the ‘wall hugging’ feature requiring a bit more space than ‘non-wall huggers’. Do you know which bases will work with a bed smaller than 86" that have the wall hugging feature? Maybe we will change to ergomotion or reverie especially if they work with our bed size.

Thanks, Adam

Hi adamjaybernstein,

Hmmm … that seems odd to me.

Our Reverie Deluxe doesn’t have a bedframe but is right up against the wall (which would be like a headboard) and it certainly doesn’t require any extra space between the frame or mattress and wall to accommodate any of its range of movement. The foot is fully extended when it is flat and retracts towards the head of the bed when the head is lifted so it would work well inside any bedframe that the flat base would fit inside and wouldn’t require any extra space on either end to accommodate movement. I didn’t realize that any of them required any extra room (although it may be something I just wasn’t aware of) and I would confirm this with Leggett & Platt directly.

Thank you again for your help. It seems that all wall huggers require more space than non-wall huggers. The Leggett bases require more space than the Reverie. The reverie wall hugger does require more space than the Reverie non-wall hugger according to a sales rep at Reverie. The new Tempurpedic premier and the Reverie Deluxe both require less space than the Leggett and Platt wall huggers. We are going with the Temp Premier since we were given a good deal and prefer the massage feature and the remote to the Reverie. I hope the Temp Premier ends up being a good base since it is so new we are a little expensive. Have you heard anything lately about the new temp premier base?

Thanks, Adam

Hi adamjaybernstein,

Well this certainly contradicts my own personal experience and the experience of those I talked with that sell these every day who said that if the outside dimensions of an adjustable bed physically fits inside the inside dimensions of a bedframe then there is no “extra” clearance required. If anything they thought it may be the other way around because a non wall hugger could push the mattress in one direction or another (lifting the foot for example could push the mattress against the headboard) but this wouldn’t be a significant issue.

As I mentioned … In the case of my own Reverie the head of the bed lifts and moves away from the wall before the wall hugger kicks in and moves the mattress back towards the wall. At full extension of the head end of the mattress there is a gap of more than 6" between the adjustable bed/mattress and the wall and the wall hugger function has also moved the foot of the bed towards the head (and would move it away from any footboard). All of the people I talked with had no knowledge of any requirement of any extra space required if the adjustable bed physically fit the bedframe.

I haven’t tried the new Tempurpedic Ergo Premier adjustable beds but I believe they are made in the same factory as Reverie and have very similar functions although they have three massage motors instead of two (head, foot, and lumbar) and have a display on the remote.

Thank you, Phoenix. We were also very surprised by this information. Also, I was under the impression that the new Temp premier adjustable is now made in house by tempurpedic in USA (Ergo advanced was made by Reverie). Adam

Hi adamjaybernstein,

Not only was I surprised (and still doubtful) … I don’t see the reason why and it certainly wouldn’t apply to my bed. I plan to phone Reverie tomorrow and ask them more about it. As I mentioned none of the people I talked with that sold Reverie or L&P had ever even heard of the issue.

I don’t know who is making the new premier adjustables (I haven’t looked or asked anyone) but it would also surprise me if they were making them in house and had switched from Reverie. The head and leg elevation is also exactly the same as Reverie at 70 degrees head, 47 degrees foot.
