Happy New Year! After 2 months of my husband sleeping in a recliner chair, I have just ordered an adjustable frame and am about to order a latex mattress from Arizona Premium Mattress. My dilema–after speaking to Greg on the phone, he told me they don’t like to have a layered mattress on an adjustable frame. Due to the fact that the layers aren’t glued together (that was the selling point for me to be able to adjust the layers) there would be too much shifting of layers when the frame is “adjusted”. Next week I am going to drive up to the showroom to actually “test drive” some combinations of layers and am going to pursue the topic of why the layers need to be glued. I am tired of doing this research and my husband can’t figure out what is taking me to long to make a decision on beds. Had I not found this site, I would probably still be mired in the quicksand of mattress searching, so at least I am getting close. Do you have any thoughts on this gentleman’s statements? Thanks.

It wouldn’t be an issue for me personally and most other manufacturers of latex mattresses that use unglued layers would tell you they are fine on an adjustable bed. Latex is quite “sticky” and the layers don’t tend to shift over each other very easily, especially with a tight fitting cover, and while there may be a slightly increased chance of some slight shifting over time, with a zip cover it’s relatively easy to unzip the covers and “wave” the layers back into position.

Thank you for your quick response! I figured with the weight of the layers and like you said the “sticky” feeling (I had previously looked at SleepEZ and noticed that) I was surprised at his comment. I am purchasing the frame online from adjustable beds (got a queen ergomotion 400 for $1000 thru “netotiate” which is $45 cheaper that adjustable beds 5% discount) and am now planning on getting the mattress. I noticed that Arizona Premium Mattress comes in at around $450 cheaper for an all latex mattress with 9 inches of latex than one from SleepEZ. But I want to check it out first in person since I am lucky to live relatively close to both companies. Then while reading another post on here I wonder if I should get one of the bed rugs. Any comments?

The bed rug would add some ventilation under the mattress but I don’t know how well it would work under an adjustable bed because unlike latex inside a cover it could shift fairly easily. It is also a rough surface which could cause some wear to the mattress with constant bending over time and it may also weaken the bed rug because of its stiffness. I would check with them to see how suitable it would be for an adjustable bed both in terms of constant bending and with shifting because I don’t have any direct experience with it.
I use my mattress directly on my adjustable bed and while it does increase the risk that goes with less ventilation … the other risk factors were low enough that the tradeoff for having the benefits of an adjustable bed were worth it for me.
My “gut sense” is that it probably wouldn’t be the best idea but I would check with them for a more “authoritative” opinion.

Thanks. I will do that but your reasoning makes sense. It would also be one less thing to order, etc. To think I started looking for a mattress last memorial day when the “mattress sales” are in full swing. Little did I know that those sales are pretty much fake. My thoughts were to spend around $500 but then I began to realize that in about 5 years I would be doing the same thing again. So my quest began. Many hours later I was becoming quite frustrated and wondered if the end would ever come. Then I started reading about latex and was impressed but not with the cost. It was about then that I happened to find this site. I was excited to finally get the information I had been looking for in one place. I think I have read most everything here. That is how I discovered Sleepez and Arizona Premium Mattress. Then my husband’s pulmonary doctor suggested getting an adjustable frame. Now the cost increased much more. In the end including the 5% discount (thank you) and taxes we will spend about $2500…much more than I had dreamed, but will have a good bed that will last 4 times as long as the bed we have now which will be hauled away. And hopefully we will be sleeping together again!!! Thanks for the fantastic information. Now I just have to order the mattress!
