Advice modifying a 5 year old mattress

Hello Mattress Experts!

I have a 100% Natural Talalay mattress that is 5 years old. My layers were S-M-M-XF for most of that time. I was starting to feel shoulder pressure and hand tingling (140# side sleeper)…I just bought a plush layer that arrived today. I set it up P-S-M-M and removed the XF layer. It’s a 13" mattress. I can already tell that it will likely hurt my back. It feels really soft in the hips and kind of “soggy”.
My question is: what layer arrangement would you mattress gurus try first? I recently bought a vZone for our other home and LOVE it. So I guess I always have the option of buying a separate vZone layer (or DIYing it~but I am not sure I have the patience!). I’d like to keep this mattress long term. It is a Cal King and my husband has his side dialed in perfectly.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. Re: hand tingling. I tried a new pillow and a new mattress…it may be a medical issue, so I am investigating other underlying causes.

I guess the first question I would ask was besides the shoulder did the other mattress give you any issues? If not then I would go back to your original S-M-M-XF configuration and then try a simple zoning experiment. I would slide the 2nd medium layer down and put your plush layer in the shoulder area (should start just below the armpit, doesn’t matter if the layers hang off the bed) then put the soft layer back on top with the mattress cover (unzipped) and see how that works for you. If works well then you can cut the layers where you need them and make it permanement but I always like to try things first to get an idea of how it will work before I do any layer modifications.

Something like this:

To answer your first question, no other issues with the bed. Only slight shoulder discomfort.

So you’re recommending that I leave the cover off and wrap the top layer with a sheet? Sounds cumbersome but smart!

We will try that soon. Thank you!!!

Just lay the mattress cover on top of the layer stack but obviously leave it unzipped since the layers are uncut. You can also lay a flat sheet on top of the mattress cover too if you want to see how it might feel when finished.

Hmmm…my frame is attached to a headboard which is attached to the wall. I guess we would need to separate it to create space for the plush layer to hang over the head of the bed?

Turn the plush layer sideways instead and try hanging it out the side of the bed. Then hopefully there’s room to allow the medium to hang out past the foot of the bed.

Clever solution!
Thanks a bunch.

I also just noticed that Flobeds components are also on sale now. I thought their sales were usually only for complete mattresses…this has me pondering…
